The Kagan Abortion Distortion Spreads

We’ve highlighted Shannen Coffin’s analysis of documents  from Obama Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan concerning partial-birth abortion. It is interesting to see how far her distortion from in 1996 spread.

When she twisted the words of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) her distortion entered the bloodstream of American political debate. In documents released by the Clinton library, Elena Kagan commented that it “would be a disaster” if the ACOG memorandum would become public.  ACOG stated “the vast majority of cases, selection of the partial-birth procedure is not necessary to avert serious adverse consequences to a woman’s health.” Instead she pushed aside science and in search of a political victory and proposed the ACOG include the following language “An intact D&X [medical term for partial birth abortion], however, maybe the best the most appropriate receipt you’re in a particular circumstance to save the life or preserve the health of a woman.”

12 years later the Senator Obama refers to the ACOG statement in his pro abortion speech to Plannned Parenthood:

Obama ends his speech with these words: “It’s time for us to change that. It is time for a different attitude in the White House. It is time for a different attitude in the Supreme Court. It is time to turn the page and write a new chapter in American history.”

These are words to remember during this political season as we begin to turn the page on the last two years of American history.

ALERT: Military Facilities May Be Able To Do Abortions

As if forcing Americans to pay for abortions through the healthcare law wasn’t enough, now the Obama Administration is trying to repeal the longstanding policy that military health care facilities may not be used to perform elective abortions.

Senator Roland Burris (D-IL), who filled Obama’s senate seat after he was elected president, was the one to introduce an amendment to strip this language from current law.

As it stands now, the Senate will most likely take up this legislation after they come back from the July 4th recess next week. Senators will be home this weekend so look for opportunities to meet with them if you can.

Both the Most Reverend Timothy Broglio, Archbishop for the Military Services, and Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Chairman of the Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, have sent letters to the U.S. Senate, urging that the defense authorization bill not be approved until the Burris Amendment is reversed and the current law upheld. For texts of these letters, see: nchla.org/docdisplay.asp?ID=339 and nchla.org/datasource/idocuments/CardinalDiNardoMilitaryLetter.pdf .

And contact your Senators and tell them that you do not support our military facilities taking life -they are there to rehabilitate and save lives, not to do abortions.

From the Lips of Walter Dellinger to the Ears of God

What was probably a publicity stunt to energize pro-abortion activists on the eve of the nomination hearings of Obama’s latest Supreme Court pick Elena Kagan, former acting Solicitor General Walter Dellinger predicted Tuesday night that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe vs. Wade, the landmark decision that brought about the murder of millions of children.  The POLITICO today reports

The noted liberal scholar said the 1973 decision has become a “trophy” that the court’s conservative bloc could overturn if a Republican president chooses a replacement for Justice Anthony Kennedy.

“I absolutely believe it,” Dellinger said during a forum cosponsored by POLITICO.

“For a while I thought that one could simply chip away at a lot more and more regulations that sort of protected access (to abortions) for the most affluent women but really made it impossible for women who were vulnerable to geography, poverty (and) youth,” he added. “But now I think that, actually, it is such a symbol of a kind of jurisprudence that conservatives have set themselves in opposition to.”

Catholics need to be engaged.  Information on Elena Kagan found here and Students for Life has organized a petition.  Sign it here.

From the Breviary – 3/15/10

Yesterday, those of us in the Diocese of Arlington were asked to keep a day of prayer and fasting by Bishop Loverde to ask God’s protection and guidance for those who are crafting health care legislation.  I imagine that it is no accident that the petitions for Evening Prayer in the Divine Office for yesterday started off with these:

Glory to God the Father, who has promised through his Son to grant what is asked by those who pray together. With confidence in this promise, let us pray:
– Lord, save the people you have redeemed.

Lord, you gave the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, and brought it to perfection in your Anointed One,
may all recognize the Law written in their hearts, and keep it faithfully as a covenant.
– Lord, save the people you have redeemed.

Give those in authority a true concern for their brothers and sisters entrusted to their care,
and inspire the hearts of the people to support their leaders.
– Lord, save the people you have redeemed.

It may be a good idea to keep these petitions close to you in the coming days and pray them everyday as we grow closer to a vote on this legislation.  We cannot know what God will allow to happen, but we do know that it is our job to pray for the best.

Bella’s Eduardo Versteragui Endorses Catholic Candidate for Illinois Governor

If you know anything about Catholic rock stars, chances are you have heard of Eduardo Versteragui. He’s the Mexican actor whose compassion, love and generosity for a mother and her unborn child stole our hearts in the award-winning 2006 film “Bella.”

Versteragui has an inspiring personal history, having transformed his life and mission as an actor after coming to Hollywood and converting to the faith.  Since his conversion, he has been extremely proactive in helping spread the pro-life message in entertainment media and the political arena.

His latest endorsement is to campaign on behalf of Adam Andrzejewski, a pro-life Roman Catholic running for Illinois state Governor.

Versteragui has issued a short video explaining why he is supporting Andrzejewski and the importance of electing a Governor who adheres to our Catholic values. As a politician who is “proudly pro-life,” Veesteragui enthusiastically shares that ”his position on the pro-life issue is as powerful as it is refreshing.” The video concludes in text, reminding viewers that Illinois is where President Obama began his political career and where he voted against the “Infant’s Born Alive Act.”

Well worth the two minute watch on YouTube:

Andrzejewski’s primary race is this Tuesday, February 2st and he is gaining momentum among five candidates, all of whom are separated by just eight points in the polls. His wife Kerry and their three daughters are parishioners of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Hinsdale, IL.

Pro Life Hero Defies Party and Vows to Continue Fight

bart_stupak_official_109th_congress_photoThe New York Times today has a fascinating profile of Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan. Most readers of St. Michael Society are aware that Rep. Stupak is a pro-life hero, especially during the healthcare debate.  His principled stand in the House of Representatives resulted in the passage of a truly pro-life amendment, which is attached to the House healthcare bill. The profile details the many attacks, some personal, hurled at Rep. Stupak.

Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you. – Matthew 5:11-12

Now the House and Senate will attempt to reconcile the two bills passed in each chamber.  Rep. Stupak claims he has 10 or 11 other pro-life Democrats willing to stand with him to ensure that if any legislation passes it will be pro-life. Look for the attacks and pressure to escalate from pro-abortion forces. Leadership will attempt to pry away votes with bribes, threats and attacks. Projects and funding will be dangled in front of their noses. Others will be threatened with removal of key committee assignments.

For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul? – Matthew 16:26

But for the special few, among them Rep. Stupak, the personal attacks will come. Let’s pray for them. Pray that they remain strong and courageous in this fight.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Healthcare: What’s Next?

UPDATE I: Politico has a story out this morning (12/23) saying that the timeline to get a bill to Obama now looks to be early to mid-February instead of before the State of the Union. More time to get a hold of your legislators to tell them no on abortion funding. Also, CNS News.com has an interview out today quoting Rep. Bart Stupak about the pressure he is recieving from the White House to stay quiet on abortion.

can-you-hear-me-nowBack in May and June, when the healthcare debate was just starting to heat up, there was hardly any mention of abortion. It just wasn’t an issue. When dozens of pro-life leaders, under the name of Stop the Abortion Mandate, got together in late July to host a webcast talking about how healthcare reform would be the “largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade”, did the media pick up on the fact that hey, maybe abortion is an issue.

And what an issue it is. Thanks to the hard work of many pro-life groups and a couple courageous Congressmen, Americans now know that healthcare reform, unless the Stupak language (named after Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life Democrat from Michigan whose amendment makes sure the government doesn’t fund abortion) is in the final healthcare bill, the government will certainly be funding abortion.

This is wildly unpopular with the American people. Yet another national poll (I think we’re on #4 or 5) came out today, this time from the respected pollsters at Quinnipiac, which said 72-73% are against “using any public money in the health care overhaul to pay for abortions.”

So what happens next?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has to find some way to reconcile Stupak’s language with the coalition of pro-abortion members who say they won’t vote for anything that restricts abortion funding. And Stupak is sticking to his guns after Sen. Nelson caved over the weekend by selling out the unborn in exchange for the government to pick up Nebraska’s Medicaid payments.

DavidBrody_Blog_MDDavid Brody at CBN said today on this blog post “The Dirty Little Secret on Abortion and Healthcare Reform” that the healthcare vote could very well come down to what pro-abortion legislators are willing to give up over making you and I pay for abortion:

Pro-life House Democrat Bart Stupak has publicly said his pro-life abortion language must stay in the final bill. He could take roughly 10 pro-life Democrats with him and vote AGAINST the final healthcare bill if his language is changed. That would sink the bill. At that point, pro-choicers would be pretty much forced into swallowing hard and accepting Stupak’s language into the final bill so healthcare reform can pass with Stupak’s gang of 10 OR they pro-choicers may say forget it. They may tell Pelosi that while they want healthcare reform in the worst way they want to protect women’s rights to abortion even more. Seriously, it really could come down to this.

The New York Times also had a front page story today that laid out some of the issues facing the Democrats on the abortion issue as well. On any compromise on abortion,

Ms. Pelosi’s room for maneuvering is limited because any changes to the language in the Senate bill could unravel the deal that provided Democrats with the 60 votes they need to get the legislation through the Senate.

Here’s the timeline as best we can tell (it’s changing rapidly so we will probably update again soon):

  •  December 24th – 8am vote in the Senate on cloture to close the debate on the healthcare bill and move it out of the Senate.
  •  The first week of January – The House and Senate will have to convene in conference to merge the House & Senate bills. A couple things can happen here. One is that the conference committee can just adopt the Senate version of the bill, which including government funding of abortion, and let the House vote on that. Second is that they can hash out a new bill that merges them both together and the Senate and House will have to vote on that bill. Either way, abortion is going to be a big issue.
  • Mid-late January – Obama is desperate for a healthcare bill to be signed before the State of the Union address, currently scheduled for January 19th, so he’s going to do everything in his power to make sure that happens.

Don’t give up now. We have to redouble our efforts. As we have heard, the Stop the Abortion Mandate people are being deluged with emails from grassroots people saying that they can’t reach their Senators and Congressmen because the lines have been shut down and emails are bouncing back.

How about going to visit your Representatives at their district offices? Go here to find your local office: http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/. Yesterday, the Family Research Council led a group of 150 concerned citizens to Senator Mary Landrieu’s district office in Louisiana because they couldn’t reach her by phone. They were met by a federal marshal telling them her offices were closed for the holidays!

So your Senators can vote on a massive government takeover of healthcare at 1am the morning of Christmas week and then tell you their offices are closed?!

Again, don’t give up. Remember, in the end, the fight has already been won.Cross

Healthcare Bill Goes from Bad to Worse

Erick Erickson at Red State is reporting a troubling late addition to the Health Care Legislation.  Quote from Red State:

Reid has slipped in a provision into the health care legislation prohibiting future Congresses from changing any regulations imposed on Americans by the Independent Medicare [note: originally referred to as "medical"] Advisory Boards, which are commonly called the “Death Panels.

harry reidOne more reason to work to defeat this terrible legislation.  Its important for Catholics not to give up and continue to let Congress know that this cannot stand.   Here is a story that quotes the Bishops and other prolife leaders.

We at St Michael Society ask that you take a moment during this busy week to join the fight.  Stop the Abortion Mandate has some great tools that you can use.

Sen. Blanche Lincoln Gets Pounded By Pro-Life Group

Sen lincoln Being the 60th and deciding vote in the U.S. Senate on anything having to do with healthcare these days isn’t a good thing for anyone since most of the country is against the government takeover of healthcare.

Even worse if you represent a state like Arkansas where only 18% of registered voter strongly favor healthcare reform and 56% of voters strongly oppose the plans.

Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) is up for re-election in 2010 and could be one of the first casualties of legislators who cast votes, especially deciding votes, for the government takeover of healthcare and government funding of abortion, which a big majority of Americans also despise.

The Susan B. Anthony List, an organization that helps to elect pro-life leaders, isn’t letting Senator Lincoln off the hook. In fact, starting this week, they are running brutally truthful ads that let Arkansans know exactly what she voted for:

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, Senator Blanche Lincoln had a choice. Stand up for Arkansas families and unborn life …or follow Barack Obama and Harry Reid and cast the deciding vote to allow the government takeover of health care. The Democrat-Gazette called it “the most significant vote Senator Lincoln’s ever cast in an otherwise unremarkable political career.”

Her choice? Senator Lincoln voted with Obama and Reid. She voted to put bureaucrats in charge of your health care, voted to raise taxes and kill jobs. Blanche Lincoln voted to allow federal dollars to pay for abortions. She voted with her DC friends, and against our values.

Call Blanche Lincoln at 501-375-2993. Tell her putting Obama and Reid before Arkansas families and unborn life is wrong. Tell Blanche Lincoln she was better off just being unremarkable. Paid for by Susan B. Anthony List, Inc.

Listen to it here: Unremarkable- Lincoln AR

Unremarkable? Ouch.

Sen. Mikulski’s Healthcare Stance is No Life

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) this week tried to brand the largest expansion of abortion since Roe vs. Wade as pro-life.  In the process she hijacked the term “whole life” in her Senate floor speech and Jason Jones, founder of http://www.iamwholelife.com/, a grassroots organization that defends all life, “From the child in the womb to the child in Darfur, from the embryo to the elderly,” reacted:

“Sadly, Sen. Mikulski’s statement demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding on her part about what it means to be Whole Life…Any legislation that compromises the dignity of the human person, including the sanctioning of abortion, as Sen. Mikulski’s does, is No Life.”

Here is what the Pro Abortion Mikulski said, “Rick Warren talks not about pro-life but whole life principles. Now i think that being able to see a doctor or an appropriate health care professional saves lives, and I view this vote on health care reform as pro-life or whole life as anyone can cast.”

“The greatest threat to human dignity in the United States is the destruction of human life in the womb; not a lack of ‘health care reform,’” responded Jason Jones, www.IAmWholeLife.com. “There is no social justice when the life of an innocent child is taken by abortion; abortion destroys a whole life and protects no one.”
