Planned Parenthood PR Machine Working Overtime

Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain and recipient of over $350 million in taxpayer dollars per year, has had to deal with tons of negative press coverage in the past couple years thanks in large part to many African-American pastors and the undercover videos of Lila Rose.

The latest ordeal comes out of the billboard campaign in Georgia, which we wrote about last week. Georgia Right to Life put up several billboards centered around Atlanta that said black children are an “endangered species” and led viewers to the website www.toomanyaborted.com. Well, the billboards seem to be having an effect as one Georgia lawmaker, with bipartisan support, introduced The Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, which would outlaw performing abortions based on race, sex or color.

As the Washington Times explains, “If enacted, the bill would make it illegal to knowingly solicit, perform or accept funding for race- or sex-selected abortions.”

And Planned Parenthood isn’t happy (of course). They don’t like it when they are accused of following in their foundress’ (Margaret Sanger) footsteps.

Planned Parenthood has been wrongly depicted as racist through “race-baiting phone calls,” added Dr. Vanessa Cullins, vice president for medical affairs for Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Those “race-baiting calls” were made by James O’Keefe and Lila Rose. They called several Planned Parenthood clinics around the country and made blatant racists statements as they were trying to find out how to donate money specifically to abort a black baby. The reactions are sickening to listen to. Not one Planned Parenthood rep turned the money down.

What has Planned Parenthood done since then? Dr. Cullins says that they have retrained their staff to “recognize and handle such calls.” Ah yes, problem solved. Now what is Planned Parenthood going to do about the fact that 70% of Planned Parenthood clinics are located in urban neighborhoods where the majority of African-Americans reside?

Stay tuned for more on this topic. It isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, Planned Parenthood is set to open up the largest abortion facility, 78,000 square feet, in the country in Houston in April. Guess where that’s going – right in the heart of two minority communities in Houston.

The Ugly Truth Revealed

It may come as a surprise to some but it’s worth noting that in the US,  nearly 40% of the abortions done are on black women, even though they only make 13% of the population. That is 3x the rate of white women. Since 1973, abortion has killed more African-Americans than anything else.

The New York Times, keying off of ingenious billboards plastered around Georgia that shed light on this disturbing statistic, ran a front-page article over the weekend “To Court Blacks, Foes of Abortion Make Racial Case.” Newsbusters has a thorough analysis of the overly bias nature of the story including that “blacks have a much higher abortion rate, but somehow this ‘old news’ is getting ‘exaggerated new life’ on the Internet.”

Even though the article was decidedly bias (hey, it’s the New York Times), it did reveal the campaign by Georgia Right to Life to put this issue on the table and make sure that African-Americans know that they are truly targeted by Planned Parenthood. Over 70% of Planned Parenthood clinics are located in urban neighborhoods where the majority of African-Americans reside. This isn’t a conspiracy, as the New York Times would like you to believe, but all out crisis in the black community.

The extremely high abortion rates have always been a problem but several prominent African-American pastors started a public campaign against Planned Parenthood when audio was released by Live Action Films in early 2008 that had a student posing as a donor who wanted to give money to specifically abort a black baby. The PP staffers were more than happy to take the money and earmark it for that purpose. One woman was “very excited” by the prospect. See all the tapes here: http://liveaction.org/index.php/projects/racism.

Several black pastors gathered in Washington, D.C. in April outside of a Planned Parenthood to expose the racism and targeting of Planned Parenthood, whose founder Margaret Sanger, was an ardent supporter of eugenics. They sent letters to Congress, to then-candidate Obama, to Hillary Clinton and asked that they defund Planned Parenthood.

The coalition of black pastors even went to the NAACP convention in 2008 to protest and play the tapes but police moved them to the other side of the road to get out of the way.

But they aren’t giving up. They have helped to promote movies like MAAFA21 which equates slavery to abortion and now they are taking to the billboards to make sure their own communities are aware of the grave threat facing them. Leaders like Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speak frequently to crisis pregnancy centers on this issue and recount their own abortions.

For the 10th Time on Tape: Planned Parenthood Covering Up Child Rape/Abuse:

President Obama released his healthcare bill yesterday which gives an astounding $11 billion to “Community Health Centers” like Planned Parenthood. Today, Live Action Films, led by undercover student journalist Lila Rose (a Catholic by the way), released their 9th video, the 10th clinic, showing Planned Parenthood deliberately covering up child sex abuse.

The new undercover footage shows staff at a Milwaukee, WI Planned Parenthood abortion clinic counseling a purportedly 14-year-old girl not to tell anyone about her 31-year-old boyfriend and coaching her how to obtain an abortion without her parents’ consent.

In the video, after hearing the girl is 14 and her boyfriend is “much older,” the counselor says whether or not the situation will be reported by clinic workers “depends on the person you’re disclosing that information to.” When the girl says that her boyfriend is 31, the counselor tells her, “You don’t have to say anything” about the statutory rape and instructs her, “Just give them the information that’s needed.” The counselor also confirms that the 31-year-old “boyfriend” will be paying for the abortion.

The new video, ninth in a series from Live Action documenting similar behavior in 5 other states, comes amid recent controversy about Planned Parenthood’s compliance with state laws regarding minors and abortion.

Just a couple weeks ago, the Alabama Dept of Health put a Planned Parenthood clinic in Birmingham on probation for a year for several violations, including giving 2 abortions to a 13-year-old girl within 4 months and never notifying her parents. This is the same clinic that Lila Rose went undercover in, posing as an underage girl with a much older boyfriend and wanting an abortion.

If President Obama’s healthcare plan passes, Planned Parenthood will be getting billions of tax dollars to cover up child sex abuse cases like this.

Big Week in Healthcare Coming Up

A lot will be happening on healthcare next week. Not satisfied that the American people have soundly rejected their healthcare plans, that includes government-funding of abortion, President Obama, Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi are back to pushing their own agenda hard.

President Obama is meeting with GOP leaders next Thursday, Feb. 25th, which will be aired live, to talk about coming up with a bi-partisan healthcare plan. But before that he will be releasing his own reconciliation healthcare bill and posting it online either late this weekend or Monday morning. The President wants this bill to be the starting point of negotiations during the GOP healthcare meeting.

Has Obama mentioned abortion? Of course he hasn’t. But here’s the thing. Abortion HAS to be addressed somehow in the healthcare bill. If there is no specific exclusion of abortion written into the bill, like the Stupak Amendment did, then you and I will be funding abortion through healthcare. Period.

Obama knows it. Pelosi knows it. Reid knows it. And Americans know it too. We’ve written on several national polls showing that Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of government-funding of abortion.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), Nancy Pelosi is going to have a heck of a hard time passing a healthcare bill in the House that doesn’t include his amendment.

Be vigilant. Read the new bill. And contact your legislators. Like we have said, healthcare reform isn’t over yet. Obama and his allies are desperate for a healthcare bill and they are desperate to pay back all the support they have received from the abortion industry. And from the looks for it, they will do anything whatsoever to get it.

Planned Parenthood Gets Shocked in Virginia

What a turn of events for Planned Parenthood in Virginia.

The largest provider of abortion in the country decided to try to get the state of Virginia to produce a counter-Choose Life license plate that says “Trust Women, Respect Choice” and have the proceeds to go Planned Parenthood.

Choose Life license plates are very popular and are available in 24 states while pro-abortion plates are available in 3 states. In Virginia, the proceeds go to Heartbeat International, a worldwide network of pregnancy resource centers.

Well, Planned Parenthood got a huge shock when the Virginia House of Delegates went to vote on the proposed license plate. One of the legislators decided to introduce an amendment that would send the proceeds to the Virginia Pregnant Women Support Fund instead of Planned Parenthood (it’s ok to laugh or cheer; we did).

The VA Pregnant Women Support Fund helps pregnant women with various kinds of support during unplanned pregnancies – basically they are the opposite of Planned Parenthood.

In a turn of events that sent Planned Parenthood into a tizzy, the House of Delegates passed the amendment and then passed the bill!

The grassroots manager of Planned Parenthood of Virginia, Courtney Jones, said: ”I’m outraged about the funds going to the Pregnant Women Support Fund because they don’t provide the same services as Planned Parenthood does.”

That’s right Courtney. The Pregnant Women Support Fund does not take the life of unborn children.

The Virginia State Senate passed a similar bill today but that version sends the money to Planned Parenthood so before a final bill is passed, both chambers will have to resolve the differences.

Let’s hope that the proceeds don’t go to Planned Parenthood since, among other reasons, their very mission is in opposition to the license plate’s message of trusting women. Planned Parenthood consistently opposes laws that are pro-woman like parental consent laws and a PP clinic in Birmingham just got put on probation for violations like giving a 13-year-old two abortions in 4 months without ever notifying her parents or the police (which is mandated by law since that kind of sexual relationship is child abuse).

Do you live in Virginia and want to contact your legislators about this bill and tell them not to send proceeds of the new plate to Planned Parenthood? Go here http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform.

Lila Rose: Profile of a Pro-Life Hero

At St. Michael Society, we are going to start a new feature focusing on an introduction to a pro-life hero. First up is a young woman whose photo is posted at most Planned Parenthood clinics across the country. She is a thorn in the side of the abortion industry and a fearless pro-life warrior.

Lila Rose is president of Live Action, a student-run organization, who has uncovered the real Planned Parenthood in several undercover investigative projects in the past few years – everything from racial bias to the cover up of child sex abuse to giving women complete misinformation about abortion.

Lila is also a recently converted Catholic and winner of one of the Life Prizes awards in 2009 and is truly an inspiration. She is persistent, persuasive and dedicated to the cause of ending abortion.

Last year, Live Action released a series of videos in the Mona Lisa Project, which sought to expose Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation for purposely covering up child rape and sexual abuse. The project led to a series of firings in Indiana and investigations in Arizona and Alabama. It led to a law in Tennessee to hold organizations like PP more accountable.

Yesterday the Alabama Dept. of Health announced that the Planned Parenthood in Birmingham is on a year-long probation for serious violations of failing to follow state law that requires a parent or legal guardian to give consent before an abortion. Of note, one violation was an instance of a 12-year-old girl who had 2 abortions in 4 months. When asked about it, the Planned Parenthood worker did not think this was unusual or potentially showing neglect. Also, PP was using expired suction equipment and at least 1 expired medication, with an open needle attached. Also, the air conditioning was out. It was 90 degrees in one of the operating rooms during one of the inspections. To see the actual documentation, go to here: http://liveaction.org/files/PPViolations.pdf. Here’s the video that started it all: http://liveaction.org/blog/planned-parenthood-probation/.

To keep up with Lila Rose and Live Action, be sure to fan them on Facebook and check out their blog and website.

Lessons from the Lectionary

I am not for a moment about to suggest that this is the way God intended us to interpret this, but for those who happened to attend daily Mass on the Friday before the MA special election and the anniversary of Obama’s inauguration, you were treated to this story about how the people complained against Samuel and demanded that they be given a king to rule over them as other nations have.

http://bit.ly/7HFp4E

God, through Samuel, warned the people that if this were to happen, the king would quickly use his authority to tax them, take their property, oppress them with labor, and make their lives generally miserable, and that eventually they would complain to God to remove the king, and God would not listen to their complaints.

But, the people would not listen and insisted that they be given a king.  And so, God told Samuel to give them exactly what they want.  And wouldn’t you know – eventually they complained to God about the king.  Funny how that happens.

And it is also funny how history just keeps repeating itself even into our day – when even in our free republic we get caught up in the moment and cry out for a king of sorts;  someone to rule over us in a way where we don’t have to worry about anything.  He will provide everything for us.  And before we know it we get exactly what we wished for only to regret that moment of weakness.

If you ask me, that reading just happened to be in the right place at the right time for Americans to reflect on the choices we make through our voting, and the discernment we should take when deciding.

In fact, that whole series of readings was interesting given the events of the world.  On Wednesday, January 20 – the anniversary of Obama’s inauguration – daily Mass-goers woke up to the news that MA had elected a republican senator, and were then treated to the story of David and Goliath for the first reading.

Just sayin’….

Can’t Get Through To Your Representatives? Visit Their District Offices.

NoAbortionFundinginHealthcareHave tried call or email your Senator or Congressman and either the lines were busy 24/7 or your emails bounced back when you tried to tell them that you don’t want government run healthcare that pays for abortion on demand?

That’s what Stop the Abortion Mandate (STAM) leaders were hearing. So they created the Holiday Recess Toolkit for pro-lifers and others who are having trouble reaching their Congressmen and Senators. STAM is urging members to go to district offices to meet with their elected officials and staff while they are home for winter recess. The Senate doesn’t come to DC until January 18th while the House comes back next week.

We highly recommend this thoughtful kit – it contains a good script when calling to set up an office visit, talking points, questions to ask and background on abortion funding in healthcare. You can download it here: http://bit.ly/850wLU.

Georgetown University Administrative Ties to Planned Parenthood

Georgetown has once again found itself treading in controversial waters.

St. Michael Society editors have learned of the University’s administrative ties to the largest abortion provider in the United States: a current nursing adjunct instructor and former vice president, both of whom served in the upper echelon of Planned Parenthood for at least a decade each.

The first comes from the University’s own paper of record, The Georgetown Voice. According to the publication’s blog “Vox Populli,” a current adjunct instructor at Georgetown’s School of Nursing and Health Studies previously worked for Planned Parenthood – as President and CEO of local Ohio and Maryland chapters and for at least 10 years.

According to her curriculum vitae (download it here), Geidner-Antoniotti was President and CEO of the Mahoning Valley Planned Parenthood from 1990 to 1997, where she increased increased donor loyalty and giving and patient numbers. She held the same job from 1998 to 2000 with Planned Parenthood’s Maryland branch and was an acting project manager with Planned Parenthood Federation of America in the interim.

More recently, she was the CFO of the Whitman-Walker Clinic and has won a host of public awards. At Georgetown, Geidner-Antoniotti is involved with strategic planning and execution

The second was reported today by CatholicCulture.org :

Dr. Gary Lewis Filerman, who chaired the Department of Health Systems Administration at Georgetown University until 2008, is a former Planned Parenthood vice president, according to the university’s web site. Dr. Filerman, who began to teach at Georgetown in 2000, served as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s vice president for international development from 1993 to 1996, as president of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington from 1990 to 1991, and as a member of the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington from 1986 to 1992.

For both Geidner-Antonoitti and Filerman, that’s at least a decade each working within the upper ranks of Planned Parenthood’s management. Not exactly something Georgetown could claim to ignore as they evaluated their resumes.

It’s a chilling discovery at any time of year, but perhaps even more disturbing as we’re reminded of what Planned Parenthood has done to desecrate Christmas in their annual “Choice on Earth” campaign. More on that by Jill Stanek here, complete with fundraising email from their 2009 campaign.

This discovery also comes just months after Georgetown complied with the White House request to “cover up all signs and symbols on the wall of the state behind where the President spoke” during his April 14th address at the University. Read that story reported by CNS News online here .

Pray that St. Michael the Archangel defend us in battle and help Georgetown reclaim its Catholic identity.

Healthcare: What’s Next?

UPDATE I: Politico has a story out this morning (12/23) saying that the timeline to get a bill to Obama now looks to be early to mid-February instead of before the State of the Union. More time to get a hold of your legislators to tell them no on abortion funding. Also, CNS News.com has an interview out today quoting Rep. Bart Stupak about the pressure he is recieving from the White House to stay quiet on abortion.

can-you-hear-me-nowBack in May and June, when the healthcare debate was just starting to heat up, there was hardly any mention of abortion. It just wasn’t an issue. When dozens of pro-life leaders, under the name of Stop the Abortion Mandate, got together in late July to host a webcast talking about how healthcare reform would be the “largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade”, did the media pick up on the fact that hey, maybe abortion is an issue.

And what an issue it is. Thanks to the hard work of many pro-life groups and a couple courageous Congressmen, Americans now know that healthcare reform, unless the Stupak language (named after Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life Democrat from Michigan whose amendment makes sure the government doesn’t fund abortion) is in the final healthcare bill, the government will certainly be funding abortion.

This is wildly unpopular with the American people. Yet another national poll (I think we’re on #4 or 5) came out today, this time from the respected pollsters at Quinnipiac, which said 72-73% are against “using any public money in the health care overhaul to pay for abortions.”

So what happens next?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has to find some way to reconcile Stupak’s language with the coalition of pro-abortion members who say they won’t vote for anything that restricts abortion funding. And Stupak is sticking to his guns after Sen. Nelson caved over the weekend by selling out the unborn in exchange for the government to pick up Nebraska’s Medicaid payments.

DavidBrody_Blog_MDDavid Brody at CBN said today on this blog post “The Dirty Little Secret on Abortion and Healthcare Reform” that the healthcare vote could very well come down to what pro-abortion legislators are willing to give up over making you and I pay for abortion:

Pro-life House Democrat Bart Stupak has publicly said his pro-life abortion language must stay in the final bill. He could take roughly 10 pro-life Democrats with him and vote AGAINST the final healthcare bill if his language is changed. That would sink the bill. At that point, pro-choicers would be pretty much forced into swallowing hard and accepting Stupak’s language into the final bill so healthcare reform can pass with Stupak’s gang of 10 OR they pro-choicers may say forget it. They may tell Pelosi that while they want healthcare reform in the worst way they want to protect women’s rights to abortion even more. Seriously, it really could come down to this.

The New York Times also had a front page story today that laid out some of the issues facing the Democrats on the abortion issue as well. On any compromise on abortion,

Ms. Pelosi’s room for maneuvering is limited because any changes to the language in the Senate bill could unravel the deal that provided Democrats with the 60 votes they need to get the legislation through the Senate.

Here’s the timeline as best we can tell (it’s changing rapidly so we will probably update again soon):

  •  December 24th – 8am vote in the Senate on cloture to close the debate on the healthcare bill and move it out of the Senate.
  •  The first week of January – The House and Senate will have to convene in conference to merge the House & Senate bills. A couple things can happen here. One is that the conference committee can just adopt the Senate version of the bill, which including government funding of abortion, and let the House vote on that. Second is that they can hash out a new bill that merges them both together and the Senate and House will have to vote on that bill. Either way, abortion is going to be a big issue.
  • Mid-late January – Obama is desperate for a healthcare bill to be signed before the State of the Union address, currently scheduled for January 19th, so he’s going to do everything in his power to make sure that happens.

Don’t give up now. We have to redouble our efforts. As we have heard, the Stop the Abortion Mandate people are being deluged with emails from grassroots people saying that they can’t reach their Senators and Congressmen because the lines have been shut down and emails are bouncing back.

How about going to visit your Representatives at their district offices? Go here to find your local office: http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/. Yesterday, the Family Research Council led a group of 150 concerned citizens to Senator Mary Landrieu’s district office in Louisiana because they couldn’t reach her by phone. They were met by a federal marshal telling them her offices were closed for the holidays!

So your Senators can vote on a massive government takeover of healthcare at 1am the morning of Christmas week and then tell you their offices are closed?!

Again, don’t give up. Remember, in the end, the fight has already been won.Cross
