Pelosi Corrected By Bishop…. AGAIN!

This one almost slipped by unnoticed, but thanks to a friend I came across this recent public chastisment of Nancy Pelosi by Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco after comments she made last month about her disagreements with Church teaching.  Ms. Pelsoi, as only Ms. Pelosi can do, managed once again to completely misrepresent the faith she claims she so avidly follows.

Anyway, the news here is not Pelosi’s heretical ramblings.  Those have been well documented before.  The news here is that another bishop has risen to publically correct those ramblings – to make sure that the liberals no longer go unchecked when they pretend to evenagelize in the media.

The St. Michael Society is happy to report on the courage and leadership that is being shown by many of our American bishops since the Obama-Notre Dame scandal.  This time, Archbishop Niederauer gets the props.  If you have a moment, send him your thanks, support and prayers.  (you can contact him at info@sfarchdiocese.org)

Here is his open letter to Nancy Pelosi on the real meaning of conscience, free will, and what it means to be a Catholic.

Pelosi called out for being a fake Catholic theologian

nancy_pelosi

Politics Daily has a good piece calling out Nancy Pelosi for months and months of publically proclaiming to be an “ardent and practicing Catholic”, yet getting every fact about the faith wrong.

“Interviewed by Eleanor Clift for Newsweek’s year-end issue, Pelosi capped an 18-month succession of clamorously incorrect public statements about what Catholics believe with her own take on the meaning of freedom.”

Perhaps in one of the Speaker’s bigger gaffe’s regarding the Catholic faith, in response to a question on when life begins, around the time of the 2008 Presidential election on Meet the Press, she said – “I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is, over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition.”

I remember our priests at Sunday Mass absolutely livid over her statements. Because she’s a public figure, many bishops thankfully stood up and did their job of helping to lead souls to the truth and declare her statements completely false and against Church teaching.

The article is definitely worth a read and is getting a lot of commentary from readers. Check it out here.

Pat Buchanan and the Church Militant

Human Events has posted Pat Buchanan’s latest artcle which gives a great summary of the many reasons for conservative Catholics to have much hope.  Over the past several months (beginning mainly with the Notre Dame fiasco) it has been really encouraging to see so many bishops stepping up to be a strong voice for orthodoxy and to ensure that heretics are not dictating what is or what is not acceptable for Catholics to believe.

SMS highly recommends that you kick back with a glass of wine and a leftover turkey leg while you read Buchanan’s piece over at Human Events.

It’s Far From Over – Subsidiarity, The Bishops and Health Care

by Patrick Looby

It is a fundamental principle of social philosophy, fixed and unchangeable, that one should not withdraw from individuals and commit to the community what they [individuals] can accomplish by their own enterprise and industry.” – Pope Pius XI, Quadragesimo Anno

On September 29, I wrote about the Catholic principle of subsidiarity, warning that Catholics need to be careful about focusing just on the single issue of abortion  in their objections to Obamacare, instead of focusing on the bigger problem of the public option which makes all other evils possible.

As long as it is a government-controlled public option, then any prohibition of abortion (or any evil) is illusory anyway.  Any so-called guarantee we get that abortion will not be included is only as good as the next election, or the next round of Supreme Court appointments.  (Remember – we live in a country where the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness co-exists with the right to kill your unborn child)

While it was quite an accomplishment to obtain a bipartisan prolife majority, 240 votes for the pro-life Stupak-Pitts Amendment prohibiting federal dollars from paying for abortion in health care, prolifers are right to realize that the Stupak amendment is likelty to get scrapped in conference.  In the end, Pelosi needed to allow some type of no-abortion funding measure to pass in order to have a chance at getting the broader bill through.  Pro-life leaning, vulnerable Democrats, and a handful of blue dogs made it clear to her they needed to be able to go home and say they voted against abortion funding in health care.  The good news is, unlike the phony Capps and Ellsworth Amendments, Stupak does have teeth, but those teeth are likely to get pulled in conference.

So if the US Bishops don’t clarify the Catholic position on subsidiarity as it relates to this debate, then this chess move on the part of Pelosi may just work, and we will be looking at socialized medicine.  For it is the public option in the bill that is the most dangerous part, as it makes all things possible.

As Father David Bosnich clearly wrote back in the 1990s when the Clintons tried to take over the health care system, subsidiarity is one of the key tenets of Catholic social teaching, stating “that nothing should be done by a larger or more complex organization that can be done by a smaller and simpler organization.”  Back then, Catholics felt the same frustration when the US Bishops seemed to focus only on abortion in the HillaryCare debate, and were not being clear that centralizing governmental control of social programs like health care was also contrary to Catholic teaching, because it opens the door to abuse of power and enslaves mankind to a welfare state mentality.

Just about every pope in the last 150 years has warned against the modern movement toward welfare states.  Overreliance on the government makes man into a slave of the state as it turns off his inner drive to be self-sufficient and responsible for his actions.

Even with good motives on the part of politicians, the temptation is just too great to increase people’s reliance on the government, for it creates powerful voting blocks of people who now must continue to vote for politicians who promise to maintain their way of life.  One’s livelihood and happiness is no longer dependent on individual productivity in the community, but on the button that is pressed in the voting booth.  “Why work for what I need, when I can just vote someone in who will give it to me free of charge?” becomes the mentality in a welfare state that has continually violated the principles of subsidiarity.

In fact, the abortion debate is nothing more than an indication of the problem of government run health care.  The fact that milions of Americans were glued to c-span hoping there would be enough votes to prohibit their tax dollars from paying for elective abortion should be enough for anyone to understand the principle of subsidiarity.  That experience of being powerless is what happens when we unnecessarily surrender power to the state.

We haven’t even had the debate on whether or not our public insurance plan will consider feeding tubes as ordinary or extraordinary care.  (Remember Terri Schaivo?)   Or whether or not homosexual partners will be given a family plan.  Or whether or not sterilization will be covered as birth control.  Or whether embryonic stem cell therepy will be covered.  etc. etc. etc.

All of these issues, and plenty we haven’t even thought of because the technology is not developed yet, will be left to a political vote.  We will not have any consumer power in determining what is acceptable in society, but will be at the mercy of whichever political philosophy has the majority in government.

Thomas Peters at American Papist, and Raymond Arroyo expressed the same concern that the bishops have not been more outspoken against the public option.  It almost appears to be a replay of the 1990s.

However, the difference between now and the 1990s is that we have had some courageous bishops who have written against this assault on freedom.  But, what we need desperately as this debate moves on to the Senate, is a unified statement from the conference against this government takeover of health care.

Abortion: The Healthcare Holdup

bulldozerHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to bulldoze healthcare reform through the House this week but is being held up by Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI), and many others who share his views on abortion, who are trying to make sure abortion is not funded by the government.

Pelosi and her pro-abortion allies are desperately trying to come up with a compromise to strip away pro-life Dems from Stupak’s coalition but so far, it’s a no-go.

pelosi whisperIt’s either the government funds abortion or it doesn’t. No wonder they can’t reach a compromise.

Not to get into the weeds too much but a fake compromise was brought up by Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) that was promptly shot down which basically let the government hire out contractors to pay for abortion services. Any thinking person could see through that smokescreen. National Right to Life is working overtime to make sure everyone knows how fake this compromise really is: http://bit.ly/2udXnw.
Pelosi has got to be pulling her hair out at this point. Here’s what major news outlets are reporting:

New York Times - The House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, a supporter of abortion rights, has little choice but to heed the concerns of members of her caucus who oppose abortion.

The HillBut Ellsworth’s plan has run into opposition from anti-abortion rights groups. The U.S. Conference of Bishops has rejected the “segregated-funds” approach. “They’re not strengthening the language, they’re strengthening their camouflage,” said Douglas Johnson of National Right to Life.

Reuters - Democrats in the House of Representatives scrambled on Wednesday to iron out lingering concerns over abortion in a healthcare reform bill that was headed to a close and potentially historic weekend debate.

It’s not over yet so please continue to reach out to your elected officials and tell them you don’t want abortion funding in the healthcare bill.

As Catholics, we have a civic duty to voice our concerns when a grave injustice is being committed in our society. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in section 2238, says-

[Catholics] loyal collaboration includes the right, and at times the duty, to voice their just criticisms of that which seems harmful to the dignity of persons and to the good of the community. (emphasis ours)

Catholic Bishops Ask for Your Help to Stop Abortion Funding

Congress is preparing to debate health care reform legislation.  The Catholic bishops of the United States strongly support genuine health care reform that protects the life and dignity of all, from the moment of conception until natural death. However, all current bills are seriously deficient on abortion and conscience rights, and do not yet provide adequate access to health care for immigrants and the poor.

With this link, you’ll find a special flier from the US Bishops Conference that you can share with others asking us to please contact your Representative and Senators immediately and urge them to fix these bills with pro-life amendments.

Additionally this web address that allows you to send an email message to Congress with a click of a button. The bishops have asked for our swift action and the commitment of our prayers for this critical effort.  Thank you for your help.  We can help make sure that health care reform will be about saving lives, not destroying them.

Let us pray:

That Congress will act to ensure that needed health care reform will truly protect the life, dignity and health care of all and that we will raise our voices to protect the unborn and the most vulnerable and to preserve our freedom of conscience. We pray to the Lord.

Backing Up Bart

Healthcare reform is coming down to the wire and the Associated Press notes this morning that abortion is indeed dividing House Democrats. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pulling out all the stops to make sure she has the votes she needs to pass a healthcare reform bill – and to make sure that abortion will be paid for by government dollars.

bart_stupak_official_109th_congress_photoBut one Democratic Congressman is doing everything he can to make sure that doesn’t happen. Congressman Bart Stupak, a Democrat from Michigan and a Catholic, is bucking his party leaders and standing up for the unborn. He has an amendment that says in plain language no government funds will be used to fund abortion through healthcare.

In fact, Stupak’s amendment (Congressman Joe Pitts (R-PA) is the co-sponsor) is the onlyway that abortion will be excluded from the healthcare bill.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) says that the Dems have done everything they can to make sure abortion is not included in healthcare. Um….right. Then why did you vote down at least 5 different amendments in committee that would have explicitly included abortion? Oh right, because you have 100% pro-abortion vote rating from NARAL.

But what about the Hyde Amendment, doesn’t that already make sure the government doesn’t fund abortions? Nope, it sure doesn’t. Want to read why? See here and here.

How It’s Going to Go Down

Since Congress is ultimately a governing body and makes laws, it means sometimes they do complicated things that we members of the general public could care less about. However, this time we have to pay attention.thumbs-up

Congressman Stupak’s amendment must be allowed on the House floor for a vote to make sure abortion is excluded from healthcare. But pro-abortion Catholic Speaker Nancy Pelosi has to give the okay to let it go to the floor.

Stupak made is clear to Pelosi that unless his amendment comes to the floor for a vote, he will vote with the Republicans to stop the debate on the health care bill – which has to happen for the giant, massive H.R. 3200 to come to the floor for a vote at all.

If Stupak and his pro-life Democrat colleagues are successful in stopping the House from adopting the rules for debate, Pelosi may not be able to have a vote at all on healthcare reform. The Associated Press story this morning says that Stupak may very well have the votes to do that.

Pelosi and her pro-choice allies have repeatedly said that abortion is not included in healthcare reform. If they are so confident, why not let a specific exclusion of abortion be included in the bill?

 What can you do?

 1)      Thank Congressman Stupak for standing up for the unborn. He’s in a difficult position and is doing the right thing. Send him a note here.

2)      Contact Speaker Pelosi’s office and tell her to allow a vote on Congressman Stupak’s amendment. Contact her office here.

Abortion is still in the healthcare bill. What are pro-lifers doing about it?

Not holding back, that’s for sure. If any of the current healthcare bills pass as proposed, it will be the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade, according to National Right to Life Committee.

Many pro-life groups have put the rest of their agendas on hold to focus solely on healthcare. Several organizations formed the Stop the Abortion Mandate coalition in the summer, which held a historical webcast with 19 pro-life leaders and over 36,000 activists. The Family Research Council built on that success and had another webcast a week later with over 70,000 participants.

CatholicVote’s action center CatholicAction parodied a Hollywood video/PSA that had celebrities endorsing current healthcare reform proposals. We just love the spirit of CatholicVote ads and the creative genius behind their work.

The Susan B. Anthony List created a great video to show that politicians are just hiding behind the Hyde Amendment when they say that abortion isn’t included in healthcare legislation. In reality, the Hyde Amendment, which has to be renewed every year, doesn’t even apply to healthcare funds, only Medicaid.

Americans United for Life president Charmaine Yoest has a great column in today’s Wall Street Journal entitled “Tax Dollars Shouldn’t Fund Abortion.” She talks about how current legislation would be breaking over 30 years worth of the government not funding elective abortion. Healthcare reform, as it stands, is a radical departure from the status quo.

AUL also released a fantastic short video calling out elected officials, including President Obama, for deceiving Americans on whether or not abortion is included in healthcare.

And Freedom2Care, the coalition of groups that want conscience protections for doctors who decline to perform or refer for abortions, are focusing on the point of view of healthcare professionals. Results from an online survey reveal startling news: 95% of faith-based physicians agreed, “I would rather stop practicing medicine altogether than be Dr. Sandy Christiansenforced to violate my conscience.”

While current healthcare proposals would flood the already overloaded healthcare system in America with millions more patients, all the while forcing doctors to choose between their morals or their profession, how can President Obama possibly expect Americans to receive quality and timely care if his policies will force many doctors to quit?

Several pro-life leaders all got on their webcams recently to show a united front against abortion coverage in healthcare reform. At such a crucial time in the history of our nation and in the fight to protect the unborn, these leaders are showing that we all must get involved and do it now.

What can you do? Contact your Member of Congress and tell you don’t want government dollars paying for abortions. Tell them abortion is not healthcare. And tell them you don’t want your doctor forced out of the practice of medicine.

Congressman Stupak – A Thorn in Pelosi’s Side

Congressman Bart Stupak, a Catholic Democrat from Michigan, deserves accolades for holding his ground on an issue that the majority of Americans oppose: having the government pay for abortions through healthcare reform.

Congressman Bart Stupak

Congressman Bart Stupak

William McGurn  nails it in his column today, suggesting that Stupak is the new Bob Casey problem for the Democratic party. Bob Casey, the late pro-life governor of Pennsylvania, was famously denied a speaking slot at the 1992 Democratic convention, while the party easily found slots for pro-choice Republicans. McGurn notes that the “moment helped tar the Democrats as a party of abortion intolerance—a problem the party thought it put behind it in 2006 when the governor’s son, Democrat Robert Casey Jr., was elected senator as a pro-life Democrat.”

But party leaders are making the mistake all over again and now, “Just like Gov. Casey before him, Mr. Stupak’s stand for life—in this case, his fight against tax dollars for abortion—is making him a thorn in the side of a Democratic president.”

Here’s the kicker – remember President Obama’s speech at Notre Dame earlier this year (yes, I’d rather forget it happened as well)? The President almost convincingly urged everyone to find “common ground” to “reduce the number of women seeking abortions.”

Mr. President, where’s the ‘common ground’ when your party and its leaders are about to force Americans to pay for abortions through massive healthcare reform?

Rep. Stupak is fighting to get an explicit exclusion of abortion written into healthcare legislation but his party won’t even let him bring his amendment to the floor for a vote, which stands in stark contrast to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s own words that “no Member of Congress should be silenced on the floor.”

Now Stupak is making sure that Speaker Pelosi and President Obama know he’s serious:

Last week Mr. Stupak, 24 other Democrats and 158 Republicans sent the speaker a letter asking her to make good on that pledge. Members of the House, they said, should have the “right to vote their conscience on an amendment offered by Congressmen Stupak and [Joe] Pitts [R., Pa.] regarding government funding for abortion.”

Does he have enough votes to get the exclusion written into the bill? McGurn says that no ones knows yet if he’s got the votes to block the healthcare bill if he’s not allowed to offer his amendment but you have to believe he’s close – both Speaker Pelosi and President Obama have personally reached out to him.

Bart Stupak is truly a hero – standing up against his own party and fighting for those who have no voice. He wants healthcare reform to pass, just not at the expense of the government paying for abortions.

Go here to send a message of encouragement to Rep. Stupak.

Hiding Behind the Hyde Amendment

The Susan B. Anthony List has taken a creative and somewhat humorous approach in attempting to explain why the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits government money from funding some abortions, does NOT apply to current healthcare proposals. Many elected officials are hiding behind the Hyde Amendment when questioned by their constituents or the media on whether or not abortion will be funded by government money through healthcare.

In reality, the Hyde Amendment is completely sidestepped in current healthcare proposals and does not apply, which opens up an entire new source of money in the government that will go to funding abortions.

Here’s a 70 second explanation:
