Good News About Mother Teresa!

Fantastic news – Mother Teresa will officially be honored with US postal stamp! Thanks for everyone’s work in contacting the postal service to express your support for the stamp and thanks to CatholicVote.org for leading the way with their website www.stampoutbigotry.com.

If you remember, when the stamp was first announced the Freedom from Religion Foundation began spreading lies about Blessed Mother Teresa, accusing this holy nun of having a ‘darker side,’ and calling her a ‘polarizing Roman Catholic figurehead.’ They attacked both the USPS and a (almost) saint!

The ceremony officially dedicating the stamp will be held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC on September 5th, 2010 – the 13th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death.

 Spread the word!

Stop The Bigotry

We knew our excitement over the new stamp by the United States Postal Service honoring Mother Teresa would not be shared by everyone.  We never dreamed that it would turn ugly.  We shouldn’t have been so naive.  Atheist groups are now mobilizing to stop the USPS from issuing a Mother Teresa stamp.

We need your help and ask you to become active again.  Our friends at Catholic Vote have started a petition.  Please act now.  You can find it here:CatholicVoteAction Petition.

Atheist Group Goes After Mother Teresa and USPS

mother teresa stampReady for your blood to boil? Remember we told you that the US Postal Service would be rolling out a stamp featuring Mother Teresa this year? Many of you commented that you couldn’t wait for the stamp! It’s truly a great testament to her devout and self-sacrificial life.

Well, the Freedom From Religion Foundation came out today blasting the USPS for creating this stamp and are urging their supporters to boycott the stamp and engage in a letter-writing campaign to expose the “dark side of Mother Teresa.”

It’s one thing to go after the US Postal Service, which we think is completely uncalled for in this situation, but it’s a whole other situation to target a woman who is on the path to sainthood and was a living testament of Christ’s love. And for many who knew her and continue to work with her order, what the atheists are doing is outright blasphemy. The organization claims that this is a separation of Church & State issue (isn’t everything to them?) and that the USPS is pr0moting Catholicism with the stamp. Nevermind that, in the past, they have done stamps commemorating “Malcolm X, the former chief spokesman for the Nation of Islam, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.”

The spokesperson for the atheist organization said that “Mother Teresa infused Catholicism into her secular honors — including an ‘anti-abortion rant’ during her Nobel Prize acceptance speech — and that even her humanitarian work was controversial.” Ah, so now we get to a deeper issue. Apparently the Freedom From Religion Foundation doesn’t like that Mother Teresa was pro-life.

They also make a lot of outrageous claims as well about her order, the Missionaries of Charity, which we won’t even dignify with a reprint here but if you want to read the whole horrid story, FoxNews.com has it here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,584165,00.html.

Mother Teresa to be Featured on U.S. Postal Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service today announced that they will recognize Mother Teresa and feature her as one of the 23 official stamps to be printed in 2010.

With this stamp, the U.S. Postal Service recognizes Mother Teresa, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work. Noted for her compassion toward the poor and suffering, Mother Teresa, a diminutive Roman Catholic nun and honorary U.S. citizen, served the sick and destitute of India and the world for nearly 50 years. Her humility and compassion, as well as her respect for the innate worth and dignity of humankind, inspired people of all ages and backgrounds to work on behalf of the world’s poorest populations.

Hats off and thank you to the Postal Service!

They took this opportunity to share Blessed Teresa’s “divine inspiration” for her work, founding the Missionaries of Charity (MC) order of religious sisters, and even presented the Sisters’ vows of chastity, poverty, obedience and “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor.”

As an aside, several St. Michael Society editors have had the privilege and honor to get to know the Missionaries of Charity in Washington through volunteer work, including the Sisters and the residents whom they serve at the Gift of Peace home in Northeast DC.

They are a vibrant group of women whose faith, resilience, courage and even humor have touched our lives and opened our hearts to the Lord. If you feel called to donate money or your time to volunteer at Gift of Peace, a home that cares full-time for dozens of the city’s poor, sick and homeless, feel free to contact us at: stmichaelsociety@gmail.com or contact the Sisters directly from the website at: www.giftofpeace.info
