Healthcare: What’s Next?

UPDATE I: Politico has a story out this morning (12/23) saying that the timeline to get a bill to Obama now looks to be early to mid-February instead of before the State of the Union. More time to get a hold of your legislators to tell them no on abortion funding. Also, CNS News.com has an interview out today quoting Rep. Bart Stupak about the pressure he is recieving from the White House to stay quiet on abortion.

can-you-hear-me-nowBack in May and June, when the healthcare debate was just starting to heat up, there was hardly any mention of abortion. It just wasn’t an issue. When dozens of pro-life leaders, under the name of Stop the Abortion Mandate, got together in late July to host a webcast talking about how healthcare reform would be the “largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade”, did the media pick up on the fact that hey, maybe abortion is an issue.

And what an issue it is. Thanks to the hard work of many pro-life groups and a couple courageous Congressmen, Americans now know that healthcare reform, unless the Stupak language (named after Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life Democrat from Michigan whose amendment makes sure the government doesn’t fund abortion) is in the final healthcare bill, the government will certainly be funding abortion.

This is wildly unpopular with the American people. Yet another national poll (I think we’re on #4 or 5) came out today, this time from the respected pollsters at Quinnipiac, which said 72-73% are against “using any public money in the health care overhaul to pay for abortions.”

So what happens next?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has to find some way to reconcile Stupak’s language with the coalition of pro-abortion members who say they won’t vote for anything that restricts abortion funding. And Stupak is sticking to his guns after Sen. Nelson caved over the weekend by selling out the unborn in exchange for the government to pick up Nebraska’s Medicaid payments.

DavidBrody_Blog_MDDavid Brody at CBN said today on this blog post “The Dirty Little Secret on Abortion and Healthcare Reform” that the healthcare vote could very well come down to what pro-abortion legislators are willing to give up over making you and I pay for abortion:

Pro-life House Democrat Bart Stupak has publicly said his pro-life abortion language must stay in the final bill. He could take roughly 10 pro-life Democrats with him and vote AGAINST the final healthcare bill if his language is changed. That would sink the bill. At that point, pro-choicers would be pretty much forced into swallowing hard and accepting Stupak’s language into the final bill so healthcare reform can pass with Stupak’s gang of 10 OR they pro-choicers may say forget it. They may tell Pelosi that while they want healthcare reform in the worst way they want to protect women’s rights to abortion even more. Seriously, it really could come down to this.

The New York Times also had a front page story today that laid out some of the issues facing the Democrats on the abortion issue as well. On any compromise on abortion,

Ms. Pelosi’s room for maneuvering is limited because any changes to the language in the Senate bill could unravel the deal that provided Democrats with the 60 votes they need to get the legislation through the Senate.

Here’s the timeline as best we can tell (it’s changing rapidly so we will probably update again soon):

  •  December 24th – 8am vote in the Senate on cloture to close the debate on the healthcare bill and move it out of the Senate.
  •  The first week of January – The House and Senate will have to convene in conference to merge the House & Senate bills. A couple things can happen here. One is that the conference committee can just adopt the Senate version of the bill, which including government funding of abortion, and let the House vote on that. Second is that they can hash out a new bill that merges them both together and the Senate and House will have to vote on that bill. Either way, abortion is going to be a big issue.
  • Mid-late January – Obama is desperate for a healthcare bill to be signed before the State of the Union address, currently scheduled for January 19th, so he’s going to do everything in his power to make sure that happens.

Don’t give up now. We have to redouble our efforts. As we have heard, the Stop the Abortion Mandate people are being deluged with emails from grassroots people saying that they can’t reach their Senators and Congressmen because the lines have been shut down and emails are bouncing back.

How about going to visit your Representatives at their district offices? Go here to find your local office: http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/. Yesterday, the Family Research Council led a group of 150 concerned citizens to Senator Mary Landrieu’s district office in Louisiana because they couldn’t reach her by phone. They were met by a federal marshal telling them her offices were closed for the holidays!

So your Senators can vote on a massive government takeover of healthcare at 1am the morning of Christmas week and then tell you their offices are closed?!

Again, don’t give up. Remember, in the end, the fight has already been won.Cross

Small Crowd of Pro-Choicers Rally: Want You to Pay for Abortions

DSC08840

Planned Parenthood Pres Cecile Richards & a pregnant woman with the word "planned' written across her belly

The abortion industry took to Capitol Hill today to rally the troops to make sure that the government funds abortion in healthcare. St. Michael Society editors infiltrated the Stop Stupak  rally and got to hear and see first hand what the pro-abortion side is up to.

Between bashing the Stupak and Hyde amendment and literally hissing at any mention of the government not paying for abortion, the crowd cheered Cecile Richards and an abortionist who works at Planned Parenthood in DC. They loved it when Rep. Diana Degette (D-CO) said “HELL, NO” to voting for any type of bill that contains the Stupak Amendment and they went wild for Rep. Jerry Adler (D-NY) when he said that the pro-choice movement will not forgive a Member who votes for any type of Stupak language this time around.

We have photos and a video below from the rally and here is a link to several statements from pro-life leaders.

President Obama: Planned Parenthood’s Puppet

obama puppetWhere does one draw the lines when accusing another of being purposely deceitful? Perhaps when it can easily be proven through an extensive paper/video trail.

President Obama clearly needs to pay back the abortion industry for their extensive support and he owes them dearly. So much so that he is quite clearly a puppet at the hands of Planned Parenthood and their allies.

As long as Obama said that no federal funds would pay for abortion but continued to work behind-the-scenes to make sure the opposite was true, Planned Parenthood kept quiet and only urged their members to make sure that reproductive care was funded by the government in healthcare reform.

But once the Stupak amendment passed the House a week ago, all hell broke loose and PP sought a good return on their investment, making sure that President Obama would do everything he could to strip the Stupak language from the healthcare bill.

The quotes below easily catch President Obama trying to please both sides of the debate while getting caught in obvious deception:

“In my mind reproductive care is essential care; it is basic care. So it is at the center and at the heart of the plan I propose. Essentially what we are doing is to say that we are going to set up a public plan…it will be a plan that will provide all essential services, including reproductive services. We also will subsidize those who prefer to stay in the private insurance market except the insurers will have to abide by the same rules in terms of providing comprehensive care including reproductive care.”
-Senator Obama, Speech to Planned Parenthood, July 17, 2007

“Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions…”
-President Obama, Address to Congress, 9/9/09

“And we’re not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions. And I want to make sure that the provision that emerges meets that test—that we are not in some way sneaking in funding for abortions, but, on the other hand, that we’re not restricting women’s insurance choices…”
-President Obama, ABC News, 11/10/09

“White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod suggested…President Obama will intervene to make sure a controversial amendment restricting federal funding for abortion coverage is stripped from final health care reform legislation.”
-Fox News, 11/15/09

Don’t be fooled. The President is going to do everything he can to make sure federal funds will pay for abortion. Not only is he the most pro-abortion president in history but he is beholden to the will of Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry.

Backing Up Bart

Healthcare reform is coming down to the wire and the Associated Press notes this morning that abortion is indeed dividing House Democrats. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pulling out all the stops to make sure she has the votes she needs to pass a healthcare reform bill – and to make sure that abortion will be paid for by government dollars.

bart_stupak_official_109th_congress_photoBut one Democratic Congressman is doing everything he can to make sure that doesn’t happen. Congressman Bart Stupak, a Democrat from Michigan and a Catholic, is bucking his party leaders and standing up for the unborn. He has an amendment that says in plain language no government funds will be used to fund abortion through healthcare.

In fact, Stupak’s amendment (Congressman Joe Pitts (R-PA) is the co-sponsor) is the onlyway that abortion will be excluded from the healthcare bill.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) says that the Dems have done everything they can to make sure abortion is not included in healthcare. Um….right. Then why did you vote down at least 5 different amendments in committee that would have explicitly included abortion? Oh right, because you have 100% pro-abortion vote rating from NARAL.

But what about the Hyde Amendment, doesn’t that already make sure the government doesn’t fund abortions? Nope, it sure doesn’t. Want to read why? See here and here.

How It’s Going to Go Down

Since Congress is ultimately a governing body and makes laws, it means sometimes they do complicated things that we members of the general public could care less about. However, this time we have to pay attention.thumbs-up

Congressman Stupak’s amendment must be allowed on the House floor for a vote to make sure abortion is excluded from healthcare. But pro-abortion Catholic Speaker Nancy Pelosi has to give the okay to let it go to the floor.

Stupak made is clear to Pelosi that unless his amendment comes to the floor for a vote, he will vote with the Republicans to stop the debate on the health care bill – which has to happen for the giant, massive H.R. 3200 to come to the floor for a vote at all.

If Stupak and his pro-life Democrat colleagues are successful in stopping the House from adopting the rules for debate, Pelosi may not be able to have a vote at all on healthcare reform. The Associated Press story this morning says that Stupak may very well have the votes to do that.

Pelosi and her pro-choice allies have repeatedly said that abortion is not included in healthcare reform. If they are so confident, why not let a specific exclusion of abortion be included in the bill?

 What can you do?

 1)      Thank Congressman Stupak for standing up for the unborn. He’s in a difficult position and is doing the right thing. Send him a note here.

2)      Contact Speaker Pelosi’s office and tell her to allow a vote on Congressman Stupak’s amendment. Contact her office here.

Abortion is still in the healthcare bill. What are pro-lifers doing about it?

Not holding back, that’s for sure. If any of the current healthcare bills pass as proposed, it will be the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade, according to National Right to Life Committee.

Many pro-life groups have put the rest of their agendas on hold to focus solely on healthcare. Several organizations formed the Stop the Abortion Mandate coalition in the summer, which held a historical webcast with 19 pro-life leaders and over 36,000 activists. The Family Research Council built on that success and had another webcast a week later with over 70,000 participants.

CatholicVote’s action center CatholicAction parodied a Hollywood video/PSA that had celebrities endorsing current healthcare reform proposals. We just love the spirit of CatholicVote ads and the creative genius behind their work.

The Susan B. Anthony List created a great video to show that politicians are just hiding behind the Hyde Amendment when they say that abortion isn’t included in healthcare legislation. In reality, the Hyde Amendment, which has to be renewed every year, doesn’t even apply to healthcare funds, only Medicaid.

Americans United for Life president Charmaine Yoest has a great column in today’s Wall Street Journal entitled “Tax Dollars Shouldn’t Fund Abortion.” She talks about how current legislation would be breaking over 30 years worth of the government not funding elective abortion. Healthcare reform, as it stands, is a radical departure from the status quo.

AUL also released a fantastic short video calling out elected officials, including President Obama, for deceiving Americans on whether or not abortion is included in healthcare.

And Freedom2Care, the coalition of groups that want conscience protections for doctors who decline to perform or refer for abortions, are focusing on the point of view of healthcare professionals. Results from an online survey reveal startling news: 95% of faith-based physicians agreed, “I would rather stop practicing medicine altogether than be Dr. Sandy Christiansenforced to violate my conscience.”

While current healthcare proposals would flood the already overloaded healthcare system in America with millions more patients, all the while forcing doctors to choose between their morals or their profession, how can President Obama possibly expect Americans to receive quality and timely care if his policies will force many doctors to quit?

Several pro-life leaders all got on their webcams recently to show a united front against abortion coverage in healthcare reform. At such a crucial time in the history of our nation and in the fight to protect the unborn, these leaders are showing that we all must get involved and do it now.

What can you do? Contact your Member of Congress and tell you don’t want government dollars paying for abortions. Tell them abortion is not healthcare. And tell them you don’t want your doctor forced out of the practice of medicine.

Abortion and Health Care – What you need to know

All health care bills making way through Congress mandate government funding of abortion

All health care bills making way through Congress mandate government funding of abortion

Mandated government-funded abortion in Healthcare?

Current health care reform bills making their way through Congress, if passed, would represent the largest expansion of government funding of abortion in history. In fact the public option and the Capps Amendment mandate Americans subsidize abortion and would, for the first time in history, establish two federal government agencies to oversee mandated government funding of abortion. In three recent national polls the American people have spoken in overwhelming majorities that they do not support government funding of abortion in health care reform.

The proposed “public plan” would pay for elective abortions, which would be direct funding of elective abortion with federal funds. This abortion coverage would not be optional – no one would be able to enroll in federal insurance plans without paying an abortion surcharge.

The abortion industry and its allies on Capitol Hill have put forward a phony Washington amendment – introduced by Representative Lois Capps http://bit.ly/O3jBM, who has a long standing pro-abortion voting record, which they falsely claim does not include government funding of abortion. This is untrue, and even the pro-choice leaning media that have researched this – the Associated Press, Time Magazine, and FactCheck.org – http://bit.ly/3LqYz4 - have reported that all bills in Congress mandate government funding of abortion in health care.

It is unfortunate that liberal politicians in Washington would use health care reform as a way to pay back their abortion industry supporters by creating two new federal agencies that would oversee mandated government funding of abortion. The only way to make sure abortion is not funded by government dollars through the health care legislation is to have an amendment specifically written into the legislation- something that 5 different committees in both the House and the Senate have rejected.

Hyde Amendment vs. Capps Amendment

Liberal Democrats and pro-abortion groups are using manipulative language to say that abortion will not be paid for under the healthcare legislation by hiding behind both the Hyde Amendment and the phony Capps Amendment.

The Hyde amendment does TWO things, no federal funding for abortion and no federal funding for coverage that includes abortion. The Capps amendment does the opposite. It uses federal funds for abortion in the public option and funds abortion coverage through affordability credits.

The current healthcare proposals completely bypass the Hyde Amendment, which only applies to funds that go through Health & Human Services Appropriations, specifically Medicaid. The argument is a moot one.

Gibbs Hasn’t Gotten the Memo

Gibbs photoAt the daily press briefing yesterday, Fred Lucas of CNSNews.com asked President Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, about abortion funding in healthcare reform:

Lucas: Thanks, Robert. It’s a question on health care, actually; two questions. First, in a letter to senators last week, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said that, quoting, “So far the health reform bills considered in the committee, including the new Senate Finance Committee bill, have not met the President’s challenge of barring the use of federal dollars for abortion.” Is that statement wrong?

MR. GIBBS: Well, I don’t want to get me in trouble at church, but I would mention there’s a law that precludes the use of federal funds for abortion that isn’t going to be changed in these health care bills.

L:ucas: There have been, though, several amendments that would explicitly bar abortions, that would therefore reject it, some of those amendments by Democrats –

MR. GIBBS: Again, there’s a fairly well documented federal law that prevents it.

Gibbs is either blissfully ignorant or is outright being deceptive. There have been a slew of stories on how abortion is paid for through the current proposals of healthcare reform legislation.  The Associated Press, TIME Magazine, and FactCheck.org, just to name a few, have all confirmed the government will fund abortions and that the Hyde Amendment does not pertain to healthcare reform.

The Susan B. Anthony List explains how politicians, and now Obama’s main spokesman, are hiding behind the Hyde Amendment when asked about abortion funding in the healthcare bill through this short and humorous video.

And Stop the Abortion Mandate has a chart that clearly shows the Hyde Amendment only applies to funds allocated to Medicaid through the Health & Human Services Department, not through the new revenue stream that is created by the healthcare reform proposals.

And National Right to Life and LifeNews.com also clearly explain why Hyde does not pertain to healthcare reform.

Robert Gibbs needs to be truthful about the government funding abortions in healthcare. But then he’d have to face the huge majority of Americans who oppose funding abortion with government money.

Hiding Behind the Hyde Amendment

The Susan B. Anthony List has taken a creative and somewhat humorous approach in attempting to explain why the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits government money from funding some abortions, does NOT apply to current healthcare proposals. Many elected officials are hiding behind the Hyde Amendment when questioned by their constituents or the media on whether or not abortion will be funded by government money through healthcare.

In reality, the Hyde Amendment is completely sidestepped in current healthcare proposals and does not apply, which opens up an entire new source of money in the government that will go to funding abortions.

Here’s a 70 second explanation:

183 Members of Congress Sign Letter to Speaker Pelosi Urging Abortion Vote

183 Democrat and Republican Members of Congress signed a letter urging Speaker Pelosi to allow a vote on the pro-life amendment to be offered by Reps. Stupak and Pitts. The New York Times ran a story outlining the importance of the abortion issue in House consideration of health care reform. We thought you might be interested in the letter found here.

“Proposed healthcare reform legislation, H.R. 3200, America’s Affordable Health Choices Act, radically departs from the current federal government policy of not paying for elective abortion or subsidizing plans that cover abortion. None of the bill reported out of the three committees of jurisdiction have addressed our serious concerns about public funding of abortion.”
