SBA List Poll: Voting for Abortion-Funded Obamacare is Political Suicide

The Susan B Anthony List, a great organization that helps to elect pro-life women, distributed a poll last week in several of the targeted congressional districts of pro-life Democrats. These Dems are part of Congressman Bart Stupak’s soldiers – those Democrats who are not happy that the current healthcare bill they are being asked to vote on funds abortion on demand with government dollars.

No doubt the Obama Administration and Nancy Pelosi are doing their best to arm twist as many of these Congressmen and women as possible. The polling results below should give them extra ammo to vote NO. We showed some of the best questions and answers below in handy charts.

Worth noting is that not only do their constituents oppose taxpayer funds paying for abortions through healthcare but that voting for this bill would be political suicide.

Also, here’s a couple highlights from the overall polling numbers:

  • 3/5 agreed that abortion and abortion funding have no place in healthcare legislation
  • 2/3 don’t want to use tax dollars to pay for abortions
  • Over 50% say they would not vote for a candidate who votes for healthcare legislation that includes federal government funding of abortion.

Full results are here: www.sba-list.org/poll.

Sebelius Doubletalk; Stupak Not Backing Down

Headlines like this don’t get old -“Could Issue of Abortion Derail Health Care Bill?”

And neither does Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), a pro-life Catholic Democrat who, over and over again has said he (and many of his colleagues) will not vote for any bill that funds abortion with government dollars.

President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Planned Parenthood, et al must be fuming. President Obama completely ignored Minority Leader John Boehner’s concern about this during last week’s healthcare summit and Nancy Pelosi is back to her talking points that the bill doesn’t change the status quo on abortion funding.

On Good Morning America this morning, Dept. of Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (remember her? – she and the late late-term abortionist George Tiller were very close) said that the bill doesn’t change the status quo on abortion.

However, on Dec. 22, 2009 Sebelius specifically said that the Senate bill is an “accounting procedure” and that everyone would pay into the abortion fund:

SEBELIUS:That would be an accounting procedure, but everybody in the exchange would do the same thing, whether you’re male or female, whether you’re 75 or 25, you would all set aside a portion of your premium that would go into a fund, and it would not be earmarked for anything, it would be a separate account that everyone in the exchange would pay.”

Stupak followed Sebelius this morning on Good Morning America and said he and his pro-life colleagues cannot vote for a bill that contains language that funds abortion. But then he took it even farther:

STEPHANOPOULOS: “Let me be clear here.  If the president doesn’t change the language, if your language is not accepted, you and your 11 colleagues who voted yes the last time will vote no this time. Does that mean you’re prepared to take responsibility for bringing down this whole bill?”

STUPAK: “Yes, we’re prepared to take responsibility. I mean, I’ve been catching it ever since last fall.  Let’s face it, I want to see health care. But we’re not going to bypass some principles and beliefs that we feel strongly about.”

As readers of this blog know, the Senate bill, which is the one Obama’s new bill mirrors, absolutely and without a doubt funds abortion with government money. There is even an “abortion fee” levied through that bill that goes to the abortion fund Sebelius was talking about. We don’t know how Pelosi, Obama and their allies say that it doesn’t fund abortion.

Obama has made it clear he wants Congress to use the tricky procedure of reconciliation to pass/ram through his unpopular healthcare reform (he’s been playing close attention to recent elections as you can tell). The power lies in the House -the bill HAS to pass the House of Representatives before it can go to Obama for his signature and then to the Senate for a majority vote.

You know what you have to do. This is it. The endgame has arrived – don’t let up in contacting your elected officials and tell them you’re not fooled by Obama’s rhetoric. You know abortion funding is in the bill and you don’t want it.

And pray for Rep. Stupak and his allies. No doubt he has the weight of the most powerful people in the world upon his shoulders and they want him to cave to their demands.

Report from LifeNews:

Richard Doerflinger, the associate director of the pro-life office of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops put Pelosi’s myth to bed.

“We do not know how anyone who has spoken to the bishops could conclude that the Senate health care bill does not fund abortions. As the bishops have said in their letters to Congress, abortion problems in the Senate bill are so serious that, despite our strong support for expanding access to health care, we will have to oppose the bill unless they are resolved,” he said.

“While the Senate bill includes some language limiting the direct use of tax credits to subsidize abortion coverage, it still violates longstanding federal precedent on abortion funding in two ways,” Doerflinger explained.

“First, the Senate’s abortion language limits only use of tax credits for abortion in qualified health plans, not other funding in the bill. For example, the bill authorizes and appropriates $7 billion for services at community health centers (increased to $11 billion in the President’s new proposal). The Hyde amendment does not prevent direct use of these billions of dollars for elective abortions (because the funds are not provided through the appropriations bill governed by Hyde); nor does any provision in the Senate bill,” the pro-life Catholic leader said.

“Second, the Senate’s language on tax credits still allows subsidies for overall health plans that cover elective abortions, against the policy of the Hyde amendment and other longstanding federal laws. The bill requires each American purchasing such a plan to make a separate payment to the insurer every month, solely to pay for other people’s abortions. This is an enormous imposition on the consciences of the millions of Americans who oppose abortion,” Doerflinger concluded in his statement.

Pro-lifers React to Healthcare Summit

A quick rundown of what some of the pro-life leaders are saying after today’s healthcare summit:

Penny Nance
CEO, Concerned Women for America

“American women control 80 percent of the health care decisions made in this country?  Most of us moms routinely are the parent who take our children to the doctor and are often the ones to make decisions for elderly relatives.  This is one of the many reasons women have such an important stake in the outcome of the current national health care debates.

“A recent poll by The Washington Times and The Polling Company found that 57% of women disagreed that ‘a federally-run healthcare program is what is best for my family and me.’  That comes as no surprise to us here at Concerned Women for America (CWA).  Our members have been speaking out all over the country in opposition to ObamaCare.  We rallied this morning outside Blair House here in D.C. and will continue to the spread the word.

“The President’s proposal costing somewhere between $1 and $2 trillion is a bad idea on so many levels.  He thinks the problem is that he did not explain it well enough.  His real problem is that the American people can read.  The vast majority of the American public oppose federal tax dollars for abortion.  The Senate bill clearly violates the public’s conscience.  I find it interesting that the Obama Administration has failed to recognize that the abortion issue was what  ultimately caused the demise of the Clinton healthcare plan.

“This willful blindness is very frustrating.  American women have had it.  Our families count on us to be the Chief Health Officer and we must make sure our government represents our interests.  What is being decided directly impacts the health of our family’s future and we are sick of ObamaCare.”

Charmaine Yoest
President, Americans United for Life

“The President’s proposal was a pro-abortion health care plan before today’s meeting and after six hours of political posturing, it’s still a pro-abortion health care plan.

Federal funding for abortion has become the deciding issue in this debate, and yet the issue was raised only briefly today.

Remarkably when Minority Leader Boehner highlighted the abortion funding in the bill, the President did not respond.

This has been his approach to the abortion issue throughout this debate:  to evade the question or misrepresent the facts to the American people.  Among other anti-life provisions, the President’s plan creates a first-ever ‘abortion tax’ to be paid by individuals participating in the health Exchange.  The plan also includes $11 billion dollars of new funding for community health centers, some of which are abortion providers. And yet Speaker Nancy Pelosi today claimed falsely that ‘there is no public funding of abortions in this bill.’

Convening this summit, and broadcasting it on television, does not create truth in advertising.  Six hours of contrived dialogue did not change the fact that this elaborate production of political theater was designed to hide the President’s true position on abortion in health care.

There is a very simple reason for this: Abortion is the bill killer.

72% of voters oppose federal funding of abortion. As they work to try to pass the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade, President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid will discover that their alliance with the abortion lobby alienates them from the mainstream of American opinion on this issue.”

Kristan Hawkins
Executive Director, Students for Life of America

“I was amazed today as I followed the summit to see that one of the main reasons healthcare reform has not passed yet, abortion, was not addressed. We know that the president’s healthcare proposal released on Monday follows the language that passed the Senate in December allowing healthcare reform to be the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade. The idea of tax payer funded abortions is not accepted by a large majority of the nation. I think Vice President Biden was right when, today, he questioned his ability to know what Americans think. Both he and Congressional leaders like Reid and Pelosi have demonstrated time and time again that they are out of touch with mainstream Americans.”

Douglas Johnson
Legislative Director, National Right to Life

“Speaker Pelosi has her own idiosyncratic dictionary, in which federal agencies can pay for abortion on demand without spending “public funds” or “taxpayer funds” for abortion.  In ordinary English, however, this is deceptive claptrap.  Every version of the health care bill has contained multiple pro-abortion mandates and federal subsidies for abortion — except for the version that was fixed by adoption of the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, over Speaker Pelosi’s objections.  But President Obama and Senator Reid succeeded in keeping that fix out of the Senate bill — indeed, the Senate produced a final bill that is the most pro-abortion single piece of legislation to reach the floor of either house of Congress since Roe v. Wade.  It would result in direct federal funding of abortion through Community Health Centers, tax subsidies for private abortion plans that cover abortion (including some federally administered plans), and pro-abortion federal administrative mandates, among other problems.  The Ben Nelson language in the Senate bill is unacceptable, but most of the problems are entirely outside the scope of the Nelson language.  If journalists want to really understand the degree to which abortion policy issues bear on the prospects for this legislation in the House, they need to abandon their misconception that the two bills differ on abortion only on one narrow issue that they can summarize in one sentence.”

For the 10th Time on Tape: Planned Parenthood Covering Up Child Rape/Abuse:

President Obama released his healthcare bill yesterday which gives an astounding $11 billion to “Community Health Centers” like Planned Parenthood. Today, Live Action Films, led by undercover student journalist Lila Rose (a Catholic by the way), released their 9th video, the 10th clinic, showing Planned Parenthood deliberately covering up child sex abuse.

The new undercover footage shows staff at a Milwaukee, WI Planned Parenthood abortion clinic counseling a purportedly 14-year-old girl not to tell anyone about her 31-year-old boyfriend and coaching her how to obtain an abortion without her parents’ consent.

In the video, after hearing the girl is 14 and her boyfriend is “much older,” the counselor says whether or not the situation will be reported by clinic workers “depends on the person you’re disclosing that information to.” When the girl says that her boyfriend is 31, the counselor tells her, “You don’t have to say anything” about the statutory rape and instructs her, “Just give them the information that’s needed.” The counselor also confirms that the 31-year-old “boyfriend” will be paying for the abortion.

The new video, ninth in a series from Live Action documenting similar behavior in 5 other states, comes amid recent controversy about Planned Parenthood’s compliance with state laws regarding minors and abortion.

Just a couple weeks ago, the Alabama Dept of Health put a Planned Parenthood clinic in Birmingham on probation for a year for several violations, including giving 2 abortions to a 13-year-old girl within 4 months and never notifying her parents. This is the same clinic that Lila Rose went undercover in, posing as an underage girl with a much older boyfriend and wanting an abortion.

If President Obama’s healthcare plan passes, Planned Parenthood will be getting billions of tax dollars to cover up child sex abuse cases like this.

Abortion Funding is Back

Government-funding of abortion is back – actually it never really left but rather was pushed under the radar for awhile. No longer though.

President Obama introduced his version of healthcare reform this morning, which is pretty close to the pro-abortion Senate version of healthcare, rather than the House side. The House version includes the Stupak Amendment, which bars the government from funding abortion, while the Senate version, and Obama’s version, don’t have the Stupak Amendment.

From the LA Times:

The president did not propose any changes to the Senate bill’s restrictions on federal funding for abortion, which would require any woman buying a subsidized health plan with abortion services to pay separately for the abortion benefit.

Led by Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Democrats are going full steam ahead on healthcare. They are purposefully driven and focused on passing some sort of healthcare reform bill that would be a disaster for the unborn and all pro-lifers and even those pro-choicers who don’t want to fund abortion with government money.

Dan Perrin at RedState says that basically the Dems are losing their minds over Obamacare and are irrationally desperate:

The Dems cannot accept the defeat of ObamaCare and will try reconciliation because Majority Leader Reid is desperate for liberal support for his failing re-election effort; Speaker Pelosi is genuinely irrational about ObamaCare, and the President believes that the entire Dem Congress should politically self-destruct to save his bill.

And Human Events reports today that Reid wants to ram through Obamacare in the next two months using a procedural trick.

And yet, Obama keeps talking about bi-partisanship but when it comes to the only issue that had bi-partisan support – that the government NOT fund abortion on demand – he trashed it.

Action is needed NOW! We know calling/emailing/visiting your Representatives gets old after awhile but they absolutely need to hear from you. Tell them that you will not support any bill that does not include the Stupak Amendment. Need some help reaching your Reps? Go HERE to find out who need to contact.

Big Week in Healthcare Coming Up

A lot will be happening on healthcare next week. Not satisfied that the American people have soundly rejected their healthcare plans, that includes government-funding of abortion, President Obama, Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi are back to pushing their own agenda hard.

President Obama is meeting with GOP leaders next Thursday, Feb. 25th, which will be aired live, to talk about coming up with a bi-partisan healthcare plan. But before that he will be releasing his own reconciliation healthcare bill and posting it online either late this weekend or Monday morning. The President wants this bill to be the starting point of negotiations during the GOP healthcare meeting.

Has Obama mentioned abortion? Of course he hasn’t. But here’s the thing. Abortion HAS to be addressed somehow in the healthcare bill. If there is no specific exclusion of abortion written into the bill, like the Stupak Amendment did, then you and I will be funding abortion through healthcare. Period.

Obama knows it. Pelosi knows it. Reid knows it. And Americans know it too. We’ve written on several national polls showing that Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of government-funding of abortion.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), Nancy Pelosi is going to have a heck of a hard time passing a healthcare bill in the House that doesn’t include his amendment.

Be vigilant. Read the new bill. And contact your legislators. Like we have said, healthcare reform isn’t over yet. Obama and his allies are desperate for a healthcare bill and they are desperate to pay back all the support they have received from the abortion industry. And from the looks for it, they will do anything whatsoever to get it.

Pelosi Corrected By Bishop…. AGAIN!

This one almost slipped by unnoticed, but thanks to a friend I came across this recent public chastisment of Nancy Pelosi by Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco after comments she made last month about her disagreements with Church teaching.  Ms. Pelsoi, as only Ms. Pelosi can do, managed once again to completely misrepresent the faith she claims she so avidly follows.

Anyway, the news here is not Pelosi’s heretical ramblings.  Those have been well documented before.  The news here is that another bishop has risen to publically correct those ramblings – to make sure that the liberals no longer go unchecked when they pretend to evenagelize in the media.

The St. Michael Society is happy to report on the courage and leadership that is being shown by many of our American bishops since the Obama-Notre Dame scandal.  This time, Archbishop Niederauer gets the props.  If you have a moment, send him your thanks, support and prayers.  (you can contact him at info@sfarchdiocese.org)

Here is his open letter to Nancy Pelosi on the real meaning of conscience, free will, and what it means to be a Catholic.

Lessons from the Lectionary

I am not for a moment about to suggest that this is the way God intended us to interpret this, but for those who happened to attend daily Mass on the Friday before the MA special election and the anniversary of Obama’s inauguration, you were treated to this story about how the people complained against Samuel and demanded that they be given a king to rule over them as other nations have.

http://bit.ly/7HFp4E

God, through Samuel, warned the people that if this were to happen, the king would quickly use his authority to tax them, take their property, oppress them with labor, and make their lives generally miserable, and that eventually they would complain to God to remove the king, and God would not listen to their complaints.

But, the people would not listen and insisted that they be given a king.  And so, God told Samuel to give them exactly what they want.  And wouldn’t you know – eventually they complained to God about the king.  Funny how that happens.

And it is also funny how history just keeps repeating itself even into our day – when even in our free republic we get caught up in the moment and cry out for a king of sorts;  someone to rule over us in a way where we don’t have to worry about anything.  He will provide everything for us.  And before we know it we get exactly what we wished for only to regret that moment of weakness.

If you ask me, that reading just happened to be in the right place at the right time for Americans to reflect on the choices we make through our voting, and the discernment we should take when deciding.

In fact, that whole series of readings was interesting given the events of the world.  On Wednesday, January 20 – the anniversary of Obama’s inauguration – daily Mass-goers woke up to the news that MA had elected a republican senator, and were then treated to the story of David and Goliath for the first reading.

Just sayin’….

Mom says to Canadian Gov – Don’t Pull the Plug on my Baby

UPDATE: The Canadian courts have granted Baby Isaiah’s family another three weeks for medical assessment by the lawyers – http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2010/jan/10012706.html. The case has garnered international interest and their Facebook page has grown from 5,000 members to over 25,000 within a week.

baby isiahThe Canadian government-run healthcare system has decided that saving one little boy’s life is not worth it -“medically” or “ethically”.

“There is no hope of recovery for Isaiah,” reads a letter from Alberta Health Services delivered to Isaiah’s parents and dated one week before the health care system intended to pull the plug on the baby it has determined irreparably brain damaged.

“Your treating physicians regretfully have come to the conclusion that withdrawal of active treatment is medically reasonable, ethically responsible and appropriate,” the letter states. “We must put the interests of your son foremost, and it is in his best interests to discontinue mechanical ventilation support.”

In two days, on January 27th, a Canadian court will either pull the plug on Baby Isaiah’s life or grant him an extension to see if he gets better – he suffers from possible brain damage after being born with the umbilical cord around his neck.

Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Michelle Crighton gave Isaiah’s parents one week, until Jan. 27, to find an independent expert – to determine if or when the baby should be taken off life-support.

But Baby Isaiah is showing signs of improving.
