The Ascension & Our Lady of Fatima

Today is a super star feast day in the Catholic Church. For some dioceses here in the US, the feast of the Ascension of our Lord is moved from today until this coming Sunday. In other parts of the country, and the world, the Ascension is celebrated today.

For those of us who don’t celebrate the Ascension today, we get to celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. It was on this day, May 13th, when Our Lady first appeared to the three little children in a place called Cova da Iria in Portugal.

The Gospel today was one of those times when Jesus really confused his Apostles (John 16:16-20) and the priest at this morning’s Mass said he was confused too because today our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, is at Fatima and celebrating the Ascension.

The ways of the Lord are mysterious and most of time, you just have to sit back and let it happen!

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!

‘The 13th Day’ Film about Our Lady of Fatima Debuts in Key Cities

A new film called The 13th Day debuted in key cities last night in commemoration of the Blessed Mother’s apparitions to three shepherd children between May 13, 1917 and October 13, 1917 in Fatima, Portugal. The film is based on the memoirs of Sister Maria Lucia de Jesus and thousands of independent eyewitnesses.

Abducted from their homes, thrown into prison and interrogated under the threat of death in the government’s attempt to silence them, the children never veered from the truth nor revealed what they promised Our Lady to keep secret. Over six months, Our Lady shared incredible prophecies and warnings to the children that included visions of Hell, the advent of World War II, the spread of Communism and the attempted assassination of a pope which we now know to be Pope John Paul II.

The movie was shot on location in Portugal and in the UK in striking black and white with key scenes appearing in color. The cinematography and visual effects are tight, bold and dramatic. The film uses state-of-the-art digital effects to create stunning images of the visions and the final miracle that have never before been realized on screen. The film has a cast of hundreds to re-create the scenes of the 70,000 eyewitnesses and three young Portuguese actors aptly depict the iconic roles of Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta.

The 13th Day is the first major motion picture by Ian and Dominic Higgins who co-wrote, co-directed the film and served as cinematographers. Ignatius Press is the distributor.

This film will move you to consider the reality of miracles, envelop you with awe at the power of God, and remind you that you are called to live your faith heroically with a view toward your eternal destination.
