Harry Knox, Pope Benedict, and the Debate On Condoms in Africa

by Christopher Gross and Patrick Looby

It is rare that philosophical arguments can be resolved by simply appealing to empirical data.  In many instances, participants in the dispute may agree on the facts but disagree about the implications of those facts or how much weight should be given to them.  However, there are rare cases where a thorough examination of the evidence proves one side is correct and the other side clearly wrong.  The “debate” between Harry Knox and Pope Benedict is one of those rare instances.

As you may know, Harry Knox, who serves on President Obama’s faith-based advisory council, said earlier this week that he stood by a statement he made last year concerning the Pope.  According to Knox, the Pope is “hurting people in the name of Jesus,” because the Holy Father has suggested that promoting condom use in Africa will not end the suffering caused by the AIDS epidemic there and in fact increases the spread of HIV/AIDS.  The problem with Knox’s position, despite his appeal to the ‘science,’ is that the empirical evidence does not support his attack.  It actually favors the Pope.

Support a Catholic Speaker Month: Pam Stenzel

Matthew Warner at Fallible Blogma had the great idea of involving as many Catholic blogs and bloggers as possible to join in Support a Catholic Speaker Month 2009 by choosing from a list of 50 Catholic speakers and writing about each one on a different blog.

We gladly choose dynamic abstinence education speaker Pam Stenzel.pam stenzel

As a teenage, one of the editors of St. Michael Society remembers hearing Pam speak on video to her youth group at church about sex and abstinence and loved her enthusiasm and encouragement. As a teen, you can never have too many talks on the meaning of sexuality, the exclusive environment of where sex truly belongs (in marriage), love and relationships, and encouragement in the midst of an over-sexualized culture.

Pam Stenzel’s mother decided to choose life for her after conceiving through rape but gave up Pam for adoption five months after her birth. Before Pam became an internationally-recognized speaker, she counseled girls in crisis pregnancy situations and realized so many of them had no idea about the consequences and risks of sexual activity because no one ever told them.

In her talks she mixes new media, music, and videos to keep the attention of teens and relay her message in an entertaining and engaging way. She’s dynamic, funny and passionate and truly cares about the teens she speaks to. Pam also has a series of programs for parents on how to talk to their kids about sex, love, relationships and abstinence.

To learn more about Pam, check out videos of her and book her for a speaking engagement, check out her website at http://pamstenzel.com/.

Senate Committee Restores $50 Million in Abstinence Ed Funding

It’s a small victory since it still has to pass on the Senate floor, but this is a good first step.

It is encouraging that the hard work of grassroots constituencies from across the country have prevailed to ensure these common-sense programs will continue,” Huber commented in a Tuesday statement. ”While the amendment still needs to pass a Senate floor vote, tonight’s decision is a significant step in the right direction for the optimal health of America’s youth.”
