Catholic Schools Week: What does it mean to you?

Today marks the beginning of Catholic Schools Week nationwide and to help celebrate, the St. Michael Society is giving its readers the opportunity to share what they love most about Catholic schools.

Maybe it was that one special teacher who encouraged you to pursue your dreams or challenged you to grow in your Faith.

Or that opportunity to be an altar server or choir member that inspired you to draw closer to the Lord in prayer and service.

Whatever the reasons, we want to hear from you!

Please, share with us-either through words, pictures or video, how Catholic schools have made a positive impact in your life or the lives of your children and grandchildren.  Note, the content

must be positive and appropriate for this blog– no rude or coarse language – and submissions must be virtuous.

Please submit to StMichaelSociety@Gmail.com.

We’ll be checking emails often this week and will be posting appropriate submissions on this blog and also on our Facebook homepage.

The St. Michael Society would like to thank all Catholic faculty, priests and religious sisters and brothers who are committed to helping young Catholics become examples of Christ in all aspects of their lives.

We would also like to recognize the many sacrifices parents make to invest in their children’s Catholic education.

There is no greater gift to a child than the gift of Faith.

Mother Teresa to be Featured on U.S. Postal Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service today announced that they will recognize Mother Teresa and feature her as one of the 23 official stamps to be printed in 2010.

With this stamp, the U.S. Postal Service recognizes Mother Teresa, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work. Noted for her compassion toward the poor and suffering, Mother Teresa, a diminutive Roman Catholic nun and honorary U.S. citizen, served the sick and destitute of India and the world for nearly 50 years. Her humility and compassion, as well as her respect for the innate worth and dignity of humankind, inspired people of all ages and backgrounds to work on behalf of the world’s poorest populations.

Hats off and thank you to the Postal Service!

They took this opportunity to share Blessed Teresa’s “divine inspiration” for her work, founding the Missionaries of Charity (MC) order of religious sisters, and even presented the Sisters’ vows of chastity, poverty, obedience and “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor.”

As an aside, several St. Michael Society editors have had the privilege and honor to get to know the Missionaries of Charity in Washington through volunteer work, including the Sisters and the residents whom they serve at the Gift of Peace home in Northeast DC.

They are a vibrant group of women whose faith, resilience, courage and even humor have touched our lives and opened our hearts to the Lord. If you feel called to donate money or your time to volunteer at Gift of Peace, a home that cares full-time for dozens of the city’s poor, sick and homeless, feel free to contact us at: stmichaelsociety@gmail.com or contact the Sisters directly from the website at: www.giftofpeace.info

Jesus Came for All – Yes You Too

Now that we have all rushed home and are surrounded by families and friends, let’s take a moment to pray for the lonely and forgotten.  For those alone this part of the year is a time of sadness and heart break.   Ads for jewelry and new cars for that “someone special” or an empty mailbox are constant reminders of their loneliness.  The broken heartedness for the unloved or those whose love has been rejected can be overwhelming.  It is worse for those that suffer from guilt after selfishly rejecting love.

  • Lord Jesus as we commemorate and celebrate your birth this Christmas we ask that you send the Holy Spirit to the lonely, forgotten and those that have no one to pray for them.  May the Holy Spirit reveal to them your gift and help them see life through the eyes of faith.

If you find yourself alone and sad this year please try to take heart in the fact that the Jesus came for you.  The Almighty Creator could have defeated sin through power and force but instead did so through humility and suffering and he began by sending His Son.  One would think that the Lord God living as man for one second would be enough but no He did more.  Jesus came to us as a weak and defenseless baby.  The only way to see God in that baby in that manger in Bethlehem is through the eyes of Faith.

That is why we asked that the Holy Spirit inspire you to see your life through the eyes Faith.  God’s plan that began from the beginning of time includes you.  The ministry of Jesus that began in a manger includes you.  At the center of your loneliness and broken heartedness could be a calling from Christ.

Jesus might be asking you to open your heart and share His gift of love.  He might be asking you to open your heart and allow yourself to be loved by others.

You might think that Jesus has withdrawn His love but He might want you to look in a different place.  He needs warriors in his battle with evil.  This change in the way you perceive the love of Jesus might be a way to strengthen you for His plans ahead.

And lastly, you might be one of the special few like Mother Teresa or St. John of the Cross.  I write this part with sadness because I cannot imagine how painful this might be.  You may be one of the special few that are allowed to share in the sadness of Christ.

Please remember that we at the St Michael Society are praying for you and especially remember that today we celebrate and commemorate the coming of Jesus who came for you.

New Ad to Sen. Casey: “Don’t Let Us Down”

CatholicVote  just released the video of a new 60-second TV commercial that urges Senator Casey to oppose any healthcare bill that would entangle Americans in financing abortion.  The ad is slated to begin airing in northeast Pennsylvania – including in Senator Casey’s hometown of Scranton. The narrator begins by saying,

The people of Pennsylvania work hard for their money. And nobody takes their jobs, their faith and their family more seriously than the people of our state. So why is Senator Casey considering voting for a healthcare bill that would use PA tax dollars to fund abortion?

and features several real faces of his constituents, including a hardworking man who says it all in only a few short words:

Senator Casey, we take our jobs and our faith seriously. So should you.

It also includes a mother/daughter pair who implore:

We’re counting on you, Senator Casey. Do the right thing.  Don’t let us down.

“Senator Casey is a fellow Catholic who knows what is right. But he’s under tremendous pressure to support this abortion-laden healthcare bill,” said Brian Burch, President of CatholicVoteAction.org .

Christmas Panic Relief

We’re quickly approaching the 1-week red alert for Christmas, and those of us stressed about making those last minute gift purchases should first remember the real Reason for the Season … and then breathe a sigh of relief because there are still some excellent ways to incorporate Christ and our faith into those gifts.

FatherlessPostcardTake the new book, Fatherless. Several of the St. Michael Society editors have read or are reading this novel and have found it to be both informative to the Catholic conscience, redemptive and entertaining. The author has a gift for speaking to us about what it means to be spiritually fatherless and keeps you on the edge of your seat guessing and even, at times, praying for the characters who quickly become very real to you.

Apparently we aren’t the only ones who like it.  The book has received rave reviews from numerous notables including the late Fr. Richard Neuhaus of First Things Magazine, moral theologian and expert on Humanae Vitae Dr. Janet Smith, and Christopher West of the Theology of the Body Institute. Check out their brief reviews here, read about the transformative life of the author Brian J. Gail here ,  and order a copy of the book online at One More Soul, the publisher.

UPDATE: LifeSiteNews.com just posted an excellent review  and interview with the author as well as the Executive Director and CEO of One More Soul, Jennifer Giroux.

If your prayer recipient is a faithful prayer warrior, consider a new twist on the traditional full five-decade rosary.  A pocket prayer rosary or rosary ring can be kept in a purse or pocket, and those offered by The Printery House are excellent quality. Find them here.pocket rosary

The Printery House  has an abundance of good items. You can search by theme, season or occasion (like Christmas) and even by recipient. You can also feel good about being a patron to this shop as ”proceeds from the Printery House help to support the monks of Conception Abbey and Conception Seminary College, where young men receive an accredited college education as they study in preparation for the priesthood.”

MagnificatAnd of course, you can never go wrong by giving the gift of 365 days of prayer guidance.  A year’s subscription to The Magnificat would help your recipient focus their prayer, participate more fully in daily and weekly Mass, experience the Liturgy of the Hours and give keen insight into many different  saints.  The Magnificat website  even has children books and subscriptions to “Magnifikid .”

Happy shopping … and enjoy keeping Christ in Christmas giving!

Fake Catholic Groups Helping Pass Government Run Health Care?

Deal Hudson has a great piece on InsideCatholic that exposes pro-Obama, pro-abortion groups saying they can be faithful Catholics while supporting federal funding of abortion in heatlh care.  Learn more here.

The Health Care Police

It makes perfect sense.  If the government is in charge of health care – lowering costs, rationing care, deciding what needs immediate treatment – then it seems reasonable that eventually they may have to pay you a visit to make sure you are keeping your home in a way that maximizes good health.

Don’t think it could happen?  Neither did people in the UK until it was reported this week that Health and Safety inspectors will be given “unprecedented access” to family homes to make sure that citizens are protecting their children from household accidents.

As I said, this makes perfect sense.  People cannot cry for a public option and then complain when the government takes reasonable steps to mitigate rising costs.  All we can hope is that the government doesn’t abuse this power.  But, who could stop them once they are in charge of health care?

From the Blog Roll

Wall Street Journal writer William McGurn pens an interesting piece on last weekend’s healthcare vote.  He points out that prolifers are sucesseful when they ”come together and hold the line.”  The Man Who Made Pelosi Cry ‘Uncle’  ran in the Wall Street Journal but is now available free at Catholic Education Resource Center.

Eve Tusnet has a piece on InsideCatholic concerning the afterlife.  In Heaven Can Wait, she takes a hard look at the American belief Universalism, an order where God’s justice lines up neatly with American cultural preferences for self-definition and multiple “truths.”

——————————————————————————–

Senior editor of The Catholic Thing Brad Miner has a review of Scott Hahn’s new book Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots.

“Thank heavens then for a book with answers – from Scripture, yes, but also from history and from common sense; a book that celebrates “all things Catholic, and the biblical doctrine that makes them Catholic.”

Press Statements from Pro-Life Leaders on Release of House Healthcare Bill

The following statements are available for media usage:

Marjorie Dannenfelser
President, Susan B. Anthony List

“Today’s bill is does not address the concerns of pro-life Americans, but Speaker Pelosi should know that we will not weaken in the last leg of the race.  We’re targeting Members to ensure they stand strong against this and any other effort to subsizidize abortion with federal dollars.  Public opinion is on the side of Life — Americans don’t want their government paying for abortions, in health care or anywhere else.”

 David Stevens, M.D.
CEO of the 16,000-member Christian Medical Association

“As polling has shown, an impressive 45 percent of physicians say they actually are ready to quit medicine if current healthcare legislation passes. Add to that data what a national survey of faith-based physicians found:  That 95 percent are ready to leave medicine if a weakening of conscience protections would force them to violate their conscientiously held convictions. Protecting conscience rights and stopping abortion mandates are crucial to any healthcare reform passage. Lawmakers must realize that threatening or minimizing conscience protections holds the potential to create a catastrophic shortage of healthcare access, especially for poor patients.”

David Bereit
Executive Director, 40 Days for Life

“Despite President Obama’s insistence before a joint session of Congress that health care reform would not include taxpayer funding of abortion, Speaker Pelosi and fellow abortion proponents in the House of Representatives rejected the will of the overwhelming majority of Americans today by introducing a massive health care reform bill that will indeed mandate government funding of abortion coverage through the “public option.

“The 71% of Americans who oppose government funding of abortion deserve a full House vote on the bipartisan amendment that will explicitly exclude abortion from health care reform. Otherwise, within days, America will experience the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade – resulting in the deaths of millions more innocent unborn children.”

Kristan Hawkins
Executive Director, Students for Life of America

“Students for life of America is disappointed to see the House healthcare plan being presented as a compromise bill. For months, prolifers across the United States have asked that abortions not be paid for with tax dollars in the new plan. However, this new bill reflects the allegiance the democratic leaders in the house have for the billion dollar abortion industry. It should be a sad day for all Americans.”

Dr. Charmaine Yoest
President and CEO, Americans United for Life

“Health care reform, including any public option, must include explicit language prohibiting abortion coverage and funding otherwise American tax payers will be forced to pay for abortions with their tax dollars. The inclusion of abortion coverage and funding by Congress would be at odds with 71% of Americans who oppose taxpayer-funded abortions. The Capps Amendment, added to the House health overhaul bill in the Energy and Commerce Committee mark-up, explicitly allows abortion coverage and funding.”

 Douglas Johnson
Legislative Director, National Right to Life Committee

“Speaker Pelosi’s bill will establish a ‘public plan’ and authorize that federal government program to pay for elective abortions.  The abortions will be paid for with federal funds, which are the only kind of funds a federal agency can spend.  It is a hoax to claim that a federal program would pay for abortions with ‘private’ funds.  Any lawmaker who votes for a closed rule on this bill is voting to establish a nationwide federal agency program that will pay for abortion on demand with federal funds.”

 Peggy Hartshorn
President, Heartbeat International

“A government that pays for aborting babies loses sight of the importance of providing alternatives to abortion.  If Congress does not explicitly exclude abortion from the health care reform legislation, then Americans will be forced to pay for more than 300,000 additional deaths through abortion each year.  Abortion is an assault on the dignity of the human person and attacks the mother-child relationship.  Federal funding of abortion will mean a death sentence for more American babies and that more women will suffer the effects of abortion related trauma.”

  Karen Malec
Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer

“Government funding for elective abortions will mean more cases of breast cancer for mothers and more premature babies with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and other serious maladies, all of which are costly for taxpayers and policyholders. Medical texts reveal that increased childbearing, starting at an early age, and increased duration of breastfeeding protect women from breast cancer. Scientists agree, therefore, that the woman who has a baby has a lower breast cancer risk than does the woman who has an abortion. In addition, eight medical groups acknowledge that abortion further raises risk by leaving the breasts with more cancers to start.”

Bradley Mattes
Executive Director, Life Issues Institute
“Life Issues Institute opposes HR 3200.  In its current form it facilitates and funds abortion-on-demand; promotes rationing health care to our most vulnerable citizens; and forces medical professionals to participate in abortion or other procedures and activities they may find morally reprehensible.  We urge all members of Congress to oppose this bill.”
