Goodbye, Speaker Pelosi. Hello, Pro-Life Congress!

Happy mid-term election, pro-lifers!

What a great 24 hours it has been as the polls closed and races were called, many of which put pro-life Representatives into office. This also means many pro-choice legislators were voted out of office, many of whom have had a lot of power and influence in pushing ObamaCare forward and advocating against the unborn.

Here are several excellent rundowns from LifeNews.com on the biggest victories – both new pro-life blood coming in and bad anti-life going out.

$600,000 to be Awarded to Life Saving Heroes

Exciting news out today from the Gerard Health Foundation …

The foundation again will be awarding $600,000 in prize money to those who have succeeded in saving human lives and awakening the conscience of America at an invitation-only event this January in Washington DC.

That’s some prize money!

Ray Ruddy, founder of the Gerard Health Foundation, shared this at the launch of this year’s program:

Our Foundation has a profoundly simple mission: to save lives. Life Prizes works to honor those who have best accomplished this noble goal and to inspire the next generation to break the mold in their life-saving work. As last year’s winners will tell you, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary goals. We look forward to celebrating six new heroes and thanking them for their ingenuity, dedication, sacrifices and leadership.

You may recognize most if not all of the six inaugural award winners 2009:

  • Jill Stanek – Nurse who first publicly exposed infanticide of abortion survivors
  • Lila Rose - Student leader who has launched several successful, undercover investigations exposing statutory rape cover-up and racism at Planned Parenthood
  • American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) - A professional voice reaffirming the unique value and dignity of individual human life in all stages of growth and development from conception onward.
  • Richard Doerflinger – Associate Director of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, bioethics expert, and consummate researcher
  • Kay Coles James – Founder of The Gloucester Institute and of Black Americans for Life, pro-life advocate in the highest levels of government for decades
  • Margaret “Peggy” Hartshorn – President, Heartbeat International, a preeminent network of more than 1,000 pregnancy resource centers

As Human Events’ Elisabeth Meinecke notes in her piece , the 2009 ceremony and reception “drew over 1,200 attendees, with Laura Ingraham serving as master of ceremonies” and was held in January of 2009.  The popular rock band BarlowGirl headlined the fantastic event and several St Michael Society editors were fortunate enough to attend. It truly was like the Oscars of the pro-life movement.

LifeNews.com also aptly notes  that

… with the mainstream media frequently ignoring or twisting the coverage of pro-life advocates and Hollywood awards ceremonies featuring a who’s who of pro-abortion celebrities, the Gerard Health Foundation decided to create its own awards ceremony to honor pro-life heroes working against abortion.

Watch last year’s event video and read the ceremony speeches at www.LifePrizes.org.

We can’t wait until October when the award winners will be announced!

Father Fessio Defends Pope and Sets Record Straight

Many priests in parishes this weekend recounted this piece by Father Fessio, the editor and Founder of Ignatius Press, dealing with the consistent attacks on Pope Benedict XVI.

Father Fessio writes: The so-called “stalled pedophile case”, blame for which has been laid at the feet of then-Cardinal Ratzinger, had nothing to do with pedophilia and everything to do with strengthening marriage and the priesthood.

The Feast of the Annunciation

As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation, I am struck by two things: the significance of our Lord taking the same human form as each of us began our lives, and how the Virgin Mary said “yes!” to a life of pain and suffering, knowing her Son would be King but that His crown would be very different from other rulers.

The angel of the Lord appeared to Mary and said,

Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

The angel did not say “Mary, God is sending a great military leader and you are to be his earthly mother.” Or “would you care to sit on a golden throne with the Son of God, eat fine food and drink the finest drink for the rest of your life?” No, the angel Gabriel told Mary that God Almighty wanted her to give birth to a tiny baby – His baby, their baby – and that God was sending the Holy Spirit to knit that divine child in her womb! So it’s not a coincidence that this feast day falls nine months to the day before Jesus’ birth on December 25th.

It’s also not a coincidence that Jesus first took the form of a human being as a tiny embryo – vulnerable, microscopic and completely dependent upon the nourishment of fellow human being, for whom he would eventually suffer and die to save.

What would have happened if Mary said “thanks, but no thanks?” Or if fear, poverty, inconvenience or any number of other circumstances won instead of her free will and courage? Her fiat is a model to us all – especially mothers and fathers who feel unprepared to bring an unborn child to term – because “through Him all things are possible.”

For those parents, let us ask our Virgin Mother’s intercession in praying,

 Hail Mary, full of grace

The Lord is with thee;

Blessed art thou amongst women

And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary,

Mother of God,

Pray for us sinners now

And at the hour of our death.

Amen.

CBS Under Pressure to Scrap Pro-Life Ad Featuring Football Star

Update II: Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America, finds it absurd that NOW is even talking about the Tebow ad since they never cared about preview ads that demeaned women:

In the 3½ years that I advised FCC Chairman Kevin Martin on indecency issues I can’t recall one time that NOW ever spoke out about the sexually graphic or misogynistic content on CBS.I find it laughable that NOW has a problem with Tim Tebow sharing his own story.

If NOW really cared about women they would stop flacking for the abortion industry and start working on behalf of women and their concerns regarding sexually graphic and violent content on TV.

Update: Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, hits back at NOW’s (National Organization of Women) protests over the Tebow ad with a few zingers of her own as the pro-choice women’s group searches for a way to make itself relevant in an increasingly pro-life America:

NOW and company are losing their grip as their pro-abortion position sinks in public opinion. I had no idea NOW leaders were such experts on sports. Missed that part of their mission.

What is real here is their desperation to keep full information from women. Shouldn’t the “pro-choice” position respect Pam Tebow’s decision to choose Life?  What is the worst case scenario in allowing the ad to air?  Women are exposed to an example of sacrifice for the sake of an unborn child. NOW needs to explain where the harm and threat to women and children is here

University of Florida Gators Heisman Trophy winning, All-Star Quarterback, Tim Tebow, is an outspoken advocate for the unborn. Maybe that is because his mother was told to abort him and chose life instead.

Feeling the need to share his story in celebration of life, Tebow has teamed up with the well-known, pro-life, pro-family organization Focus on the Family to air a 30 second commercial during this year’s Super Bowl.

If you have not heard about the ad, it is a very simple celebration of life on the part of a family.  As the AP describes it:

We hope you will take time to either call or e-mail CBS and encourage them not to cave into pressure from the abortion industry and its advocates.

Sen. Mikulski’s Healthcare Stance is No Life

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) this week tried to brand the largest expansion of abortion since Roe vs. Wade as pro-life.  In the process she hijacked the term “whole life” in her Senate floor speech and Jason Jones, founder of http://www.iamwholelife.com/, a grassroots organization that defends all life, “From the child in the womb to the child in Darfur, from the embryo to the elderly,” reacted:

“Sadly, Sen. Mikulski’s statement demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding on her part about what it means to be Whole Life…Any legislation that compromises the dignity of the human person, including the sanctioning of abortion, as Sen. Mikulski’s does, is No Life.”

Here is what the Pro Abortion Mikulski said, “Rick Warren talks not about pro-life but whole life principles. Now i think that being able to see a doctor or an appropriate health care professional saves lives, and I view this vote on health care reform as pro-life or whole life as anyone can cast.”

“The greatest threat to human dignity in the United States is the destruction of human life in the womb; not a lack of ‘health care reform,’” responded Jason Jones, www.IAmWholeLife.com. “There is no social justice when the life of an innocent child is taken by abortion; abortion destroys a whole life and protects no one.”

ACLU Files Suits to Block Personhood Initiatives

ACLU continues its drum beat against Personhood initiatives by filing a lawsuit in Alaska. This is the latest attempt by pro-abortion groups and the industry to prevent Personhood Initiatives from going to the ballot or using the courts to strike down the will of the people.   This has taken place in Colorado, Nevada, Missouri and now Alaska.

There are Personhood efforts under way in a number of other states.  Personhood USA is doing a great job on the front lines of this battle.  Check them out here and learn more on how you can help.
