Bella’s Eduardo Versteragui Endorses Catholic Candidate for Illinois Governor

If you know anything about Catholic rock stars, chances are you have heard of Eduardo Versteragui. He’s the Mexican actor whose compassion, love and generosity for a mother and her unborn child stole our hearts in the award-winning 2006 film “Bella.”

Versteragui has an inspiring personal history, having transformed his life and mission as an actor after coming to Hollywood and converting to the faith.  Since his conversion, he has been extremely proactive in helping spread the pro-life message in entertainment media and the political arena.

His latest endorsement is to campaign on behalf of Adam Andrzejewski, a pro-life Roman Catholic running for Illinois state Governor.

Versteragui has issued a short video explaining why he is supporting Andrzejewski and the importance of electing a Governor who adheres to our Catholic values. As a politician who is “proudly pro-life,” Veesteragui enthusiastically shares that ”his position on the pro-life issue is as powerful as it is refreshing.” The video concludes in text, reminding viewers that Illinois is where President Obama began his political career and where he voted against the “Infant’s Born Alive Act.”

Well worth the two minute watch on YouTube:

Andrzejewski’s primary race is this Tuesday, February 2st and he is gaining momentum among five candidates, all of whom are separated by just eight points in the polls. His wife Kerry and their three daughters are parishioners of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Hinsdale, IL.

Stop The Attempt To Use the “Nuclear” Option

From the Susan B. Anthony List

Nancy Pelosi is plotting to salvage Pro-Abortion Bill

Nancy Pelosi has revealed her intention to use the “nuclear” option to pass an amendment to the Senate Health Care Reform Bill through the Senate.  She intends to use this procedural trick to convince Representatives to pass the unpopular pro-abortion Senate Health Care Reform Bill.  Tell your Representative to oppose using procedural tricks to shove unpopular pro-abortion health care legislation through Congress.  Demand that they stand firm against any attempt to pass the pro-abortion Senate Health Care Reform Bill into law.

Catholics Need Not Apply In Massachusetts Hospitals; Coakley Says Catholics Should Not Work In ER Rooms

Students of American history remember that in the beginning, this country did not have a very tolerant approach to different religious beliefs.  Things got so bad that for many years it was illegal in many colonies to practice Catholicism and it was pretty commonplace to see signs such as the one above on many businesses.  In fact, Massachusetts was probably the least tolerant of all the colonies, even making the death penalty available for priests who dared to say Mass.

Though the country has obviously come a long way in this regard, it is also obvious that we have not shed such anti-Catholic sentiment completely.  This became clear a couple of days ago when Martha Coakley – Democrat candidate in next week’s senatorial election in Massachusetts – gave this response to a question about Catholic hospitals and doctors that would want conscience protections in any health care initiatives so that they can practice medicine without having to participate in things like abortion.

Transcript:

Ken Pittman: Right, if you are a Catholic, and believe what the Pope teaches that any form of birth control is a sin. ah you don’t want to do that.

Martha Coakley: No we have a separation of church and state Ken, lets be clear.

Ken Pittman: In the emergency room you still have your religious freedom.

Martha Coakley: (…stammering) The law says that people are allowed to have that. You can have religious freedom but you probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.

There is so much wrong with this exchange – including a misunderstanding of the Church’s position on what is available to rape victims and what Catholic hospitals can do for them.  But, I’ll save that for another time.  Right now, with Tuesday’s election in MA rapidly approaching, it is important to just focus on the Democrat’s  ridiculous idea that doctors who have reasonable objections to participating in things like abortion should find other work – that there is simply no room in American hospitals for Catholic doctors.  And I assume that this also means that Catholic hospitals in general should close if they can’t provide abortions.

Bill Donahue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights says that Ms. Coakley is not only attacking Catholics, she is trampling on religious freedom.  Statement here.

Please make sure your Catholic family and friends living in Massachusetts know where Ms. Coakley stands on Catholicism and religious freedom.

Stupak Digs In As Nelson Sells Out on Abortion Funding in Health Care Bill

Senator Ben Nelson has sold out the unborn and has announced that he is ready to support Senator Harry Reid’s abortion funding health care bill.  If passed, Senator Reid’s health care bill will lead to the largest expansion of abortion since the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision allowing abortion on demand.  (One has to wonder what that decision would have been if the Court had been shown sonograms.) Nelson’s fascade came to an end when Reid offered money to Nelson for his home state of Nebraska. In return for this scam, Nelson has watered down his bill which will allow federal funding of abortion, but, oh, states can opt out of the government exchange if  they want.  This move undercuts the pro-life, pro-Hyde Stupak-Pitts Amendment.  But as Senator Nelson caves, Congressman Stupak is digging in, calling the Nelson abortion funding compromise, “unacceptable.”

Senator Ben Nelson

Here is how the following days will play out.

The mangers amendment released by Senator Reid now appears to have the 60 votes necessary to end debate and pass the health care reform bill in the Senate. The first in a series of cloture votes (vote to end debate on an amendment or bill) is expected around 1 am Monday morning If all goes as currently projected, the Senate would pass the health care bill sometime next week If the Senate passes its bill, there will then likely be a House-Senate Conference to negotiate the differences between the House and Senate language.  The House and Senate would then have to approve the modifications made in the conference.  In a statement released today Pro-life Caucus Co-chair Bart Stupak (D-MI) said “While I and many other pro-life Democratic House members wish to see health care coverage for all Americans, the proposed Senate language is unacceptable.”

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops responded immediately to the Nelson abortion funding Amendment. Statement here.

How ironic that as we ready for the coming of our Lord in this Advent season, that during Christmas week, the week of the birth of our savior, the United States Senate is going to pass a health care bill that provides federal funding for the taking of  innocent human life.

St. Michael Society is encouraging all of our friends, followers and supporters to please pray to our Holy Mother to continue to give Congressman Bart Stupak, and other supporting Democrats, the will and the courage to stand their ground and defend innocent human life against a wave of pressure.  We also pray to Our Holy Mother for the protection of the unborn and for a culture of life in the face of an America that continues to head further and further down the road toward a culture of death.

Finally, we encourage all to call their Senators and Representatives and tell them, no to a health care bill that leads to a massive funding of abortion, essentially an abortion industry pay out, and no to government run health care that leads to rationed care and euthanasia.

Casey Skeptics Show Up to Pray at His Senate Office, As New Ad Invokes Dad

As the health care debate rages in the Senate today, a group of 60 plus Catholics have gathered in Senator Bob Casey’s office to pray that he will stand firm and vote against any heatlh care bill that lacks a strong pro-life Amendment such as Nelson-Hatch, modeled after the Stupak Amendment.  CBN is on the story here.

While this group prays, the Susan B. Anthony List has launched a new advertisement invoking the words of the late former Governor Bob Casey, Sr to remind son what Father would do.

Help Stop Abortion Funding In Senate Health Care Bill

Unlike the House Stupak-Pitts Amendment which prevented federal funding of abortion in health care, the Senate has defeated a similar measure introduced by Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Orin Hatch (R-UT).  The Senate is about to vote on a health bill that will be the largest expansion of abortion since Roe vs. Wade.  This bill is nothing more than an abortion business pay out to Planned Parenthood and abortionists who use the taking of a human life as industry.

There is still time to stop federal funding of abortion in health care.  Even if a final Senate bill passes, absent of the Nelson-Hatch amendment, the bill then goes to a conference of House and Senate members to iron out the differences.  Then both the House and Senate will vote on the final, hybrid bill, agreed to in Conference.  This is where we could see the Stupak-Pitts Amendment reinserted into the final bill.  Many House Democrats have say they cannot vote for a health care bill unless it prevents federal funding of abortion as stated by Stupak-Pitts.

Good News and Bad News on the Marriage Front

The good news is that NY became the latest in a series of states rejecting legalized so-called gay marriage

The bad news is that the DC City Council voted in favor of a measure that would legalize same-sex marriage in the district.  This isn’t the end of the story for DC as there are a couple more hurdles that the measure has to jump through before it becomes law, but it will be a tough battle for people who are against this redefinition of marriage as the media in DC has been relentless in its attacks against groups like the Catholic Church who are fighting the measure.

SMS will keep you updated on these state battles over marriage, so check back often for the latest – especially as the DC situation moves ahead.  And don’t forget to read the US Bishops’ approved statement on marriage from their fall meeting.  It provides a tremendous defense of marriage as well as useful explanations for the Church’s position.

Santorum – Catholic Public Officials Must Heed Church Teachings

There is a great piece today by former Pennsylvania Senator (we miss him), Rick Santorum, in today’s Philadephia Inquirer.  In his piece, Santorum discusses the need for Catholic public officials to follow the teachings of the Church in matters of public policy.

Santorum on Congressman Kennedy, Bishop Tobin conflict: “Simply put, the church has membership requirements. Kennedy is free to reject them. What he is not free to do is redefine them for himself and condemn the church for not accepting his definition.”

Santorum on Catholic teaching and public policy:  “Finally, the church maintains that there is a natural law that forms the basic moral foundation of society and that can be known through the exercise of reason. Thus, a Catholic public official with a well-formed conscience can arrive at correct moral conclusions not by faith, but by reason.”

Spanish Bishops Draw Line in Sand with Pro-Abortion Politicians

Yesterday, the secretary of the Bishops’ conference of Spain, Bishop Martinez Camino,  announced that politicians who support abortion either by word or vote need to go to confession and recant their position before presenting themselves for communion.

I cannot think of a better way for our bishops worldwide to help us prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth than by making stands like this in the name of orthodoxy.

SMS sincerely hopes that this trend continues and we encourage everyone to pray for the bishops and for those pro-choice Catholic politicians who will experience a conversion of heart on this issue during this Advent season.
