Fatherless

Have you read Fatherless” yet? You should. It’s a Catholic novel that is selling fast.

The book is a real page-turner and follows the lives of a parish priest and families that have entrusted themselves to his care. It tackles a lot of hot button issues like contraception, adultery and morality in the workplace. It’s one of those books where the reader is taken into the minds of characters and feels their emotions. You won’t be able to put the book down.

Now we have some good news about the book and need your help. Fatherless, written Brian J. Gail, has been selected as one of 12 featured titles in the 2010 Catholic Summer Reading program. Voting for the top 3 adult titles is currently underway on the Catholic Summer Reading website.

Andrea Bocelli: Almost Aborted, Devout Catholic

Award-winning  pro-life blogger Jill Stanek has posted a great piece “Almost Aborted: Tenor Andrea Bocelli .” Her story links to video of the esteemed opera singer sharing his personal connection to abortion, which is both moving and beautiful:

This is a powerful reminder that every life truly is special and worth fighting for despite difficulty, pain, risk and even “expert” opinion. I’m inspired by Mrs. Bocelli having the courage to continue with her pregnancy even while knowing her child may have a severe disability. Only God could have foreseen that her child would bring so much joy – to her and to millions of people around the globe – through the gift of his voice.

It’s sad to think of how many people like Andrea we are missing today because parents feared a disability for their child and thought it was better to abort. There are so many friends, colleagues and family members we should have in our lives, but don’t. Let Andrea’s story  inspire those facing difficult pregnancies, and remind us to encourage and support those who parent children with disabilities.  God blesses each child with gifts, talents and the ability to touch so many lives regardless of their ability or disability.

This isn’t the first time Bocelli has publicly stood for what he believes in. As a devout Catholic, he declined the invitation from friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holms to sing in their wedding ceremony in 2007 because of his faith. He attended the post-ceremony festivities, but did not join them for the Scientology wedding “because I’m Catholic. I didn’t think it was respectful for my religion to be there.”

What a class act.  Bocelli follows his faith and his heart in a respectful yet assertive way. Hollywood could stand to benefit from a whole lot more than singing lessons from him.

On the Feast of Corpus Christi

Appearing at Pellevoisin in 1876, Our Lady said to Estelle Faguette:  “It saddens Me the most to see that people have no respect for My Son in The Holy Eucharist and the way the people pray whilst their minds are on other things. I say this to those who pretend to be pious.”

Today’s feast of Corpus Christi is so crucial to our Faith that it deserves reflection and clear understanding.  It is the Feast of the Body of Christ.  Today across the world, this Feast is being celebrated in Catholic Churches and schools.  Today is a great reminder of the importance of reverence to the Eucharist.

A little history on the Feast of Corpus Christi may inspire us all.  And so, SMS taps our friends at New Advent as the source.

(Feast of the Body of Christ)

This feast is celebrated in the Latin Church on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday to solemnly commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist.

Of Maundy Thursday, which commemorates this great event, mention is made as Natalis Calicis (Birth of the Chalice) in the Calendar of Polemius (448) for the 24th of March, the 25th of March being in some places considered as the day of the death of Christ. This day, however, was in Holy Week, a season of sadness, during which the minds of the faithful are expected to be occupied with thoughts of the Lord’s Passion. Moreover, so many other functions took place on this day that the principal event was almost lost sight of. This is mentioned as the chief reason for the introduction of the new feast, in the Bull “Transiturus.”

The Dawn of Demonic Deception

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of “The Pill” the Wall Street Journal ran a lengthy and misleading article (“The Birth Control Riddle” April 20, 2009) by Melinda Beck, calling the arrival of The Birth Control Pill the “dawn of dependable contraception” which “ignited the sexual revolution, ended the post-war baby boom and helped millions of women enter the work force.” Ms Beck then proceeds to lament all of the “unplanned pregnancies” which still occur today before detailing for us how safe it is now to use new and improved birth control methods.

Marshall McLuhan, the late, great expert on the media, who converted to Catholicism before he died said, “The major media are engaged in a Luciferian conspiracy against the truth.” How true! Ms Beck’s column is a prime example of this conspiracy, including such blatant lies and misrepresentations as:

“the benefits outweigh the risks” when taking “The Pill”

“…the longer a woman uses the pill, the lower her risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer”, and

“…the pill does not seem to increase the risk of getting [breast cancer]“.

Beck then goes on to reassure the readers with sources such as the Guttmacher Institute (Planned Parenthood’s own research arm) and a quote from Planned Parenthood’s VP of Medical Affairs who explains away the damaging side effects by saying, “We have to keep these things in perspective. A woman’s risk for problems is substantially higher during pregnancy.”

“The Pill” and the widespread use of other contraceptives in reality ushered in the ‘Dawn of Demonic Deception’ in America. One needs only to review some of the bitter fruits of “The Pill” to appreciate why.

  • A Mayo Clinic study said that women who use hormonal contraceptives for a minimum of 4 years prior to their first full term pregnancy have a 52% higher risk of developing breast cancer
  • Women who use a hormonal contraceptive for more then 5 years are 4 times more likely to develop cervical cancer
  • Prior to the sexual revolution and “The Pill” there were known to be 5 sexually transmitted diseases: Today there are more than 30.
  • There are over 50 medical studies which indicate that use of oral contraceptives and Depo-Provera place women at higher risk for almost all known risk factors of HIV.

As we look around today, we see how accurately Pope Paul IV predicted what would follow if contraception were adopted on a wide scale: a general lowering of moral standards, an increase in infidelity, ever-greater objectification of women, and the use of contraception as a weapon. Smaller and more broken families, rampant homosexuality, pornography, and China’s coercive one-child policy are just some of the sad and obvious reminders of Pope Paul’s wisdom in reaffirming the Church’s perennial teaching against contraception in Humanae Vitae.

Exposing the lies of contraception is, indeed, the great moral challenge of our day. It is not only a battle for life, it is a battle for souls.

When asked recently by a major publication to name her greatest regret, Martha Stewart replied, “Not having a dozen offspring.” This neatly summarizes the widespread “post-contraceptive regret” that weighs heavily on the hearts and souls of women who bought into the lies of the abortion industry. Even Catholic families have since the 1960′s dropped from 5.5 to 2.1 children today, increasingly rejecting the joys and challenges of larger families for the lesser goods of greater material comfort, “freedom,” and professional accomplishment.

The 1920′s-era story (ironically, the same time that Margaret Sanger was beginning her efforts to legalize contraception and abortion in America) comes to mind of the small boy who was peering out a window at dusk as a man came along to light the gas street lights.

His mother asked, “What are you looking at?”

As if explaining the obvious, the boy replied, “I am watching a man poke holes in the darkness.”

Today as confirmed Catholics this is all that God is asking of us – to stand in bold witness and poke holes in the spiritual darkness that surrounds us. Encountering the demonic deceptions forwarded by Ms. Beck and others who ignore the devastation wrought by contraception, we must answer with the light of truth.

Our daily faithfulness to God’s perfect plan for sexuality and marriage through the rosary and sacraments is the only way to reclaim the culture and our nation. Only by using these gifts can we help bring about a countercultural comeback of chastity and the family.

Miracles: New Book Documents Visions, Miracles Through Humble Priest

Remember the many miracles Jesus performed in his 33 years on earth as revealed in the Bible? And when He promised the gift of miracles would persist in the Church (Mark 16:17 )?

According to the  humble priest and author of a new book – whom several of the St. Michael Society editors have had the priviledge to know – miracles were not just made manifest in the days of old; Jesus is performing them through believers in this very day in age. Fr. Stefan Starzynski shares:

I personally believe that Jesus never intended his miracles to lessen or cease, but we slowly began to accept the idea that miracles are rare in the Church; they are usually associated with very holy men and women or holy places like Lourdes, France,” Father Stefan shared. ” With this belief, came a reduction in the number of miracles.  Many people conclude that because I am not a saint, Jesus would not work a miracle through me.  I believe that Jesus is once again moving his hand to work great signs and wonders among his people to awaken a skeptical age.

Read about Fr. Stefan’s new book Miracles: Healing for a Broken World below. We’d highly recommend this moving and inspirational book as a gift or personal read. Visit Amazon.com  or call 1-800-348-2440 to purchase a copy.

MIRACLE STORIES, VISIONS DOCUMENTED IN NEW BOOK INSPIRE RENEWAL OF FAITH AND HOPE FOR MANY

NEW BOOK SHOWS HOW GOD AND THE BLESSED MOTHER WORK THROUGH A HUMBLE PRIEST

WASHINGTON, DC – “The existential miracles that have happened through Father Stefan have become a new flame of hope set to rekindle the mind of the contemporary Christian and a world in desperate need of hope.”  So writes Reverend Father Boniface Ewah in his brilliant introduction to a new book by Father Stefan Starzynski titled:  Miracles: Healing for a Broken World (Published by Our Sunday Visitor).

The book not only documents how God is working through Father Stefan, who worked closely for months with Blessed Mother Theresa, it also demonstrates the amazing power of prayer and faith that is often lacking in today’s modern society.  Indeed Father Stefan reveals how prayer and faith are unequivocally linked to the various miracles Father Stefan outlines in the book supported by full and beautiful, if not heart wrenching, testimonials from the various individuals on the receiving end of these miracles.

Through prayer, faith and his increasingly popular Healing Mass, Father Stefan recounts numerous stories ranging from the healing of the sick, including babies, to miraculous events that occurred on his ordination day to the death of a newborn baby that through prayers at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe inspired the Paul Stefan Homes for Expectant Mothers .  Father also addresses visions he has received that have lead to miraculous events all of which are supported by the witnesses themselves in subsequent chapters at the end of the book, titled “Testimonials.”

Writing in his book, Father Stefan uses Church history and tradition to help readers understand the concept of miracles in every day life.  “Why are miracles important?  We live in an unbelieving time.  It is readily accepted that God worked miracles in the early Church to convert Pagan Rome and to establish his Church.”

“I personally believe that Jesus never intended his miracles to lessen or cease, but we slowly began to accept the idea that miracles are rare in the Church; they are usually associated with very holy men and women or holy places like Lourdes, France.  With this belief, came a reduction in the number of miracles.  Many people conclude that because I am not a saint, Jesus would not work a miracle through me.  I believe that Jesus is once again moving his hand to work great signs and wonders among his people to awaken a skeptical age.”   In reading Miracles: Healing for a Broken World, few will disagree.

A Stolen Caravaggio Painting Resurfaces In an Online Auction

Barely reported here in the U.S., a version of Caravaggio’s 17th century masterpiece, the Taking of Christ (Judas’ Kiss) was stolen from the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in Odessa, Ukraine on August 1, 2008 and has been recently uncovered at a Moscow online auction as of March 16, 2010.

The dramatic painting dating back to 1602 by the Italian Baroque master, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, depicts Judas embracing Our Lord and betraying Him with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane, a very apropos theme as we commemorate these events during this most Holy Week.    The National Gallery of Art has a great analysis of this painting, for those who are interested in learning more about it.

In 2008, Reuters reported that the thieves “entered through a window, bypassing an outdated alarm system by removing a pane of glass rather than breaking it. They then escaped across the museum’s roof.”  At that time Vitaly Abramov, the deputy head of a second museum in the city, the Odessa Art Museum called the theft “a cultural catastrophe, a national tragedy”.

Staff at the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in the Black Sea port of Odessa discovered the painting, called the Taking of Christ, or the Kiss of Judas, missing, cut from its frame, August 1, 2008.

A few weeks ago the painting was discovered because of an anonymous letter that Vladimir Ostrovsky, the Director of the museum received suggesting that the stolen artwork was to be found in an online auction for $2 million.

Vladimir Ostrovsky told the Ukrainian Independent Information Agency (UNIAN) that he “got frightened” when he saw a photo of “The Taking of Christ”, as well as an announcement saying that it was on sale for a mere $2 million.

According to Ostrovsky, the price is ridiculous. Art experts estimate the Caravaggio piece to be around $100 million.

Ostrovsky said that, although he was unsure whether it is the stolen item in question or just a replica, he immediately informed the Ukrainian law-enforcement authorities about it.

The other version of the same work of art is housed at the National Gallery of Ireland.  It also had a history of disappearing.  Its whereabouts remained unknown for 200 years until it was discovered in 1990 at the Society of Jesus residence in Dublin, Ireland.
