Oops, She Did It Again

We’d rather not write about this since it’s so depressing but hopefully bishops will take into account Nancy Pelosi’s loooong list of public transgressions against the Roman Catholic Church, of whom she considers herself a member, and consider serious disciplinary actions.

It’s time for Pelosi to take some serious heat for her anti-Catholic comments, not necessarily because they are anti-Catholic, but rather because she is a public figure who claims to be Catholic and because of her power, heretical statements she spouts frequently can lead the faithful astray.

She praised the nuns who threw their support behind the healthcare reform legislation the week before it was voted upon in the House of Representatives. When speaking to the Catholic Community Conference yesterday, she said this:

“I thank so many of you who helped get that passed. Thank God for the nuns. Thank God for the nuns

“Thank God for the nuns — and nuns, imagine, 50, 60 leaders of orders representing 59,000 orders — and I didn’t realize it was Dominican, Benedictine and Franciscan, Notre Dame de L’Amour, Notre Dame School Sisters, every possible kind of name you can think of, there they were on the list.  And they wrote to us saying, ‘We support this life-affirming legislation.’ We were so proud of them and they helped us do just that.”

CNSNews.com has the full story here.

Thankfully Bishop Brandt, near Pittsburgh, already publicly chastised an order of nuns who signed that letter to Obama in the 11thhour in support of the pro-abortion healthcare legislation by refusing to allow them to recruit new members in his district.

Pelosi should be next in line.

Father Fessio Defends Pope and Sets Record Straight

Many priests in parishes this weekend recounted this piece by Father Fessio, the editor and Founder of Ignatius Press, dealing with the consistent attacks on Pope Benedict XVI.

Father Fessio writes: The so-called “stalled pedophile case”, blame for which has been laid at the feet of then-Cardinal Ratzinger, had nothing to do with pedophilia and everything to do with strengthening marriage and the priesthood.

Outrage: Sr. Carol Keehan to Speak at John Carroll Society Annual Dinner on April 16

UPDATE 10:01 pm 3/25: Sr. Carol Keehan will NOT be attending the Annual Dinner. A mass email sent this evening by JCS read: “Sister Carol Keehan has decided that our annual dinner this year is not the appropriate time to address our Society and friends. We continue to be grateful to her for her many years of service to the Church and especially the poor and those in need.”  A followup personal email from Connie Mitchell read: “She will not be attending this year.  We will not have a speaker.”  So there you have it folks, problem averted.

The John Carroll Society (JCS), the Catholic DC-based organization that annually sponsors the Red Mass, has scheduled Sr. Carol Keehan to be the speaker at their Annual Dinner on April 16.  Sr. Carol Keehan is the President and CEO of the Catholic Health Association and has recently come under fire for her outright support of the healthcare bill that includes federal funding of abortion.  On March 11, Sr. Keehan wrote a letter to the House of Representatives which urged the congressmen to “move quickly” to support the Senate-approved bill.  For her strong support of the controversial health care bill despite the objections of U.S. Bishops, she was one of the 21 people to be awarded a pen used by Barack Obama in signing the health care bill.  This is traditionally done to honor lawmakers and proponents who have played a major role in pushing through a piece of legislation.

In light of recent developments, it is a disgrace that Sr. Keehan should speak at the JCS Annual Dinner.  JCS prides itself in its service to lay Catholic professionals in the DC area but if they still allow her to speak, it will severely undercut its credibility as a faithful Catholic organization.  Please contact JCS to urge them to rescind their invitation to Sr. Carol Keehan.

Rep. Mike Pence: Harry Knox Termination Long-over Due

CNSNews is reporting that Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) is calling on President Obama to fire Harry Knox from his position on the White House Advisory Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

“Harry Knox’s repeated, intolerant statements about the Catholic Church and Catholic teachings make it totally inappropriate for him to serve on President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships,” Pence told CNSNews.com in an interview Friday. ”Harry Knox’s termination from the president’s Faith-Based Advisory Council is long-over due. And we would renew our call for Harry Knox to be removed from that position by the president.”

Saint Michael Society has gathered more than 9,500 petition signatures asking Harry Knox to resign.

Representative Pence and Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) are reacting to a statement made by Harry Knox that Pope Benedict XVI ”is hurting people in the name of Jesus.”  Karen Schuberg of CNSNews reports all the background information and here is a segment by Megyn Kelly with Laura Ingraham.

Santorum: Opponents of Same-Sex Marriage Have Faced Persecution in California

Former pro-life, pro-family Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, has a terrific piece today in the Philadelphia Inquirer revealing the campaign of hate and intimidation waged by the pro-gay marriage community in California against supporters of Proposition 8.  In the November 2008 election Prop 8 was reaffirmed by a vote of 6,838,107 / 52.3% Yes votes to 6,246,463 / 47.7% No votes.

Sen. Santorum reports:

The reaction of some Prop 8 opponents – the self-proclaimed champions of tolerance – was swift and fierce. They moved to harass and persecute Prop 8 supporters.

Groups such as the misnamed “Californians Against Hate” published blacklists of Prop 8 backers that included supporters’ names and addresses. Prop 8 advocates became the target of harassing protests, phone calls, e-mails, and mailings.

A flier distributed in one town featured a photo of one Prop 8 backer, his name, the amount of his donation, and the name of his (Catholic) church. Next to his photo was the word “Bigot.”

Some Prop 8 campaign donors had to resign from their jobs or take leaves of absence to protect their employers and colleagues. Top officials of California Musical Theatre and the Los Angeles Film Festival were forced to resign just because they had donated in support of Prop 8.

That wasn’t all. These warriors for the oppressed also made a point of going after pro-Prop 8 Mormons and their church.

Despite having passed twice in California including by 61% of the vote in the 2000 election, the pro-gay marriage movement continues to try to reject the will of the people.

Harry Knox, Pope Benedict, and the Debate On Condoms in Africa

by Christopher Gross and Patrick Looby

It is rare that philosophical arguments can be resolved by simply appealing to empirical data.  In many instances, participants in the dispute may agree on the facts but disagree about the implications of those facts or how much weight should be given to them.  However, there are rare cases where a thorough examination of the evidence proves one side is correct and the other side clearly wrong.  The “debate” between Harry Knox and Pope Benedict is one of those rare instances.

As you may know, Harry Knox, who serves on President Obama’s faith-based advisory council, said earlier this week that he stood by a statement he made last year concerning the Pope.  According to Knox, the Pope is “hurting people in the name of Jesus,” because the Holy Father has suggested that promoting condom use in Africa will not end the suffering caused by the AIDS epidemic there and in fact increases the spread of HIV/AIDS.  The problem with Knox’s position, despite his appeal to the ’science,’ is that the empirical evidence does not support his attack.  It actually favors the Pope.

Obama Nominee Tried to Take Away Catholic Church Tax Exemption

Dawn Johnson, Nominated to head Justice Dept. Office of Legal Counsel

As the St. Michael Society continues with our petition drive urging the resignation of Obama’s faith based initiatives advisor Harry Knox for his attacks on Pope  Benedict XVI, there is yet another Obama friend and nominee that has a record of hostility against Catholics. Dawn Johnson, nominated by the President to head the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department, in the 1980s tried to revoke the tax-exempt status of the Catholic Church over the church’s position in defense of the unborn.

Bill Donahue, President of The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, fired back at a recent New York Times editorial encouraging her nomination.

“BASELESS CONCERNS” OVER DAWN JOHNSEN?
February 4, 2010

Catholic League president Bill Donohue directs his comments at an editorial in today’s New York Times:

If someone were nominated to serve in a major legal position in a Republican administration who previously tried to take away the tax exempt status of Islamic mosques and institutions—for purely political reasons—everyone knows that he or she would never be given a hearing.

So why is Dawn Johnsen’s nomination to head the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel still being considered? She tried in the late 1980s to take away the tax exempt status of the Roman Catholic Church, all because she wanted to silence the Church’s voice on abortion. Yet the New York Times audaciously asserts today that the “baseless objections” and “baseless concerns” of her critics should be ignored.

Since when are objections to proven instances of bigotry considered “baseless”? Would it be “baseless” to object to someone who wants to deny Muslims the same tax exempt status afforded Catholics, Protestants, Jews and others? Would not such a person be branded a bigot who is unfit to serve in any administration, especially in a high post in the Justice Department? If the answer is obvious, then why is her nomination even alive?

Between the appointment of Harry Knox, and the nomination of Ms. Johnson, Catholics are growing increasingly concerned about a trending disdain for Catholics by the President and his Administration.  This is why it is so important for Catholics to speak out and take action in every way we can to defend our faith.  Please remember to sign our petition urging the resignation of Harry Knox.

Video: Obama Advisor Will Not Back Off Comments Attacking Pope

CNS News has a video and story up in which Harry Knox, who serves on President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, reasserts his comments made back in March that Pope Benedict is “hurting people in the name of Jesus.”

Read and see it here.

Seems to not quite fit with the warm and fuzzy name of the Council on which Mr. Knox sits, and suggests the Obama Administration’s utter disdain for the Holy Father and Catholics.

Please circulate this to all of your Catholic family, friends and colleagues.  Expose the outrage and sign our petition.

We the undersigned, call for the immediate resignation of Harry Knox, who serves on President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Recently, Mr. Knox once again expressed his prejudice against the Pope and by extension all Catholics when he reaffirmed his view that the Pope "is hurting people in the name of Jesus."

These comments expose that Mr. Knox is openly hostile towards Catholics and their religious leader and should disqualify him from public service in an organization that "will work on behalf of Americans committed to improving their communities, no matter their religious or political beliefs."

Possible Miracle of Venerable Pius XII Emerges; Validates His Heroic Virtue in the Face of Mainstream Misconception

A new possible miracle has emerged that validates a life of heroic virtue of the recently declared Venerable Pope Pius XII.  The Catholic News Agency recounts this miracle:

“In 2005, a teacher of 31 years of age was expecting her third child in the city of Castellammare di Stabia.  She began to have strong pains, which after many tests and a biopsy, signaled the presence of Burkitt’s lymphoma.  The condition is typified by swollen lymph nodes, often starting in the abdominal region, and the cancer can spread to bone marrow and spinal fluid.  Not only was her health in danger, but that of her unborn child was also threatened.

Venerables Pope Pius XII and Pope John Paul II

Venerables Pope Pius XII and Pope John Paul II

The woman’s husband first prayed for the intercession Pope John Paul II, who was then only recently buried in the crypt of St. Peter’s.  It wasn’t long before the Holy Father appeared to the woman’s husband in a dream.  The spouse described to Tornielli what he saw that night, “He had a serious face.  He said to me, ‘I can’t do anything, you must pray to this other priest…’  He showed me the image of a thin, tall, lean priest.  I didn’t recognize him; I didn’t know who he might be.”

Several days passed before he, “by chance,” came across a picture of Pope Pius XII in a magazine and recognized him as the man John Paul II had shown him in the dream.

The man wasted no time in bombarding Pius XII with prayers for his wife’s healing and following her very first treatments she was declared free of the cancer, the tumor had disappeared.  In fact, she was cured so quickly that her doctors pondered the notion that they may have originally misdiagnosed the pathology.

The tests and charts were reconsulted and the initial diagnosis was confirmed. In the absence of the tumor, she had her baby and returned to work.  After some time had gone by, she decided to contact the Vatican regarding her experience.”

In the Catholic Church, the canonization of a saint goes through four major steps.  First the person is considered a “Servant of God”, then declared “Venerable”, then beatified as a “Blessed” and lastly, canonized a “Saint”.  Two miracles are needed in the making of a saint and they must be proven through appropriate canonical investigation.  For Venerable Pius XII to be beatified, or be called “Blessed”, it must be proven that a miracle occurred by his intercession.  After this step for him to be canonized a “Saint”, a second proven miracle must occur following his beatification that attributes his intercession.

In Venerable Pius XII’s case, whether this possible miracle makes the cut toward his beatification is the decision of a Tribunal and then the Congregation for the Causes of saints.  CNA continues:

“According to their report, a Tribunal has been organized by Archbishop Felice Cece of Sorrento-Castellammare to determine the nature of the occurrence and whether it will move on to the Vatican.

According to Tornielli, if they decide positively, the case will be sent on to Congregation for the Causes of Saints for investigation by a team of doctors to declare whether the event was explicable by natural means.  If there is no explanation found for the healing, theologians from the Congregation will debate the issue.  Only with their “go-ahead” can a dossier subsequently reach the hands of Pope Benedict XVI for official recognition.”

It is very refreshing to hear of the intercession of Venerable Pius XII in light of the fact that he has been falsely accused of being a Nazi sympathizer and an anti-Semite.  This accusation could not be further from the truth.

Gary Krupp, a Jewish man and the head of Pave the Way Foundation , a non-sectarian public foundation, which identifies and eliminates non-theological obstacles between the faiths, has brought to the forefront new evidence of the heroic virtue of Venerable Pius XII and has shown that he directly intervened to save countless Jews.   In a Dec. 28 New York Post article Krupp talked about how while even FDR’s America refused to accept Jewish refugees, Venerable Pius XII “issued false baptismal papers and obtained visas for them to emigrate as ‘Non Aryan Catholic-Jews.’  He smuggled Jews into the Americas and Asia. He ordered the lifting of cloister for men and women to enter monasteries, convents and churches to hide 7,000 Jews of Rome in a single day…Pinchas Lapide, a Jewish historian, theologian and Israeli ambassador, stated that the actions and policies of Pius XII saved as many as 860,000 Jews.”

How did the gross misconception come about the Venerable Pius XII was a Nazi sympathizer?  Krupp states: “A few articles in the postwar era suggested that he should have done more to confront the Nazis — but it wasn’t until 1963, in the wake of the fictitious play “The Deputy” (written five years after Pius died), that accusations began flowing that he had failed to act, that he was a cold-hearted Nazi sympathizer who couldn’t care less about the Jewish people.  The evidence strongly suggests this was part of a KGB-directed and -financed bid to smear Pius, a Soviet disinformation campaign meant to discredit the Catholic Church, which at that time was profoundly anti-Communist.”

It is time to right what has been wronged.  The Father of Lies has succeeded in convincing the public that Venerable Pius XII was “Hitler’s Pope” when in fact he was a “Friend to the Jews”.

Catholics Need Not Apply In Massachusetts Hospitals; Coakley Says Catholics Should Not Work In ER Rooms

Students of American history remember that in the beginning, this country did not have a very tolerant approach to different religious beliefs.  Things got so bad that for many years it was illegal in many colonies to practice Catholicism and it was pretty commonplace to see signs such as the one above on many businesses.  In fact, Massachusetts was probably the least tolerant of all the colonies, even making the death penalty available for priests who dared to say Mass.

Though the country has obviously come a long way in this regard, it is also obvious that we have not shed such anti-Catholic sentiment completely.  This became clear a couple of days ago when Martha Coakley – Democrat candidate in next week’s senatorial election in Massachusetts – gave this response to a question about Catholic hospitals and doctors that would want conscience protections in any health care initiatives so that they can practice medicine without having to participate in things like abortion.

Transcript:

Ken Pittman: Right, if you are a Catholic, and believe what the Pope teaches that any form of birth control is a sin. ah you don’t want to do that.

Martha Coakley: No we have a separation of church and state Ken, lets be clear.

Ken Pittman: In the emergency room you still have your religious freedom.

Martha Coakley: (…stammering) The law says that people are allowed to have that. You can have religious freedom but you probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.

There is so much wrong with this exchange – including a misunderstanding of the Church’s position on what is available to rape victims and what Catholic hospitals can do for them.  But, I’ll save that for another time.  Right now, with Tuesday’s election in MA rapidly approaching, it is important to just focus on the Democrat’s  ridiculous idea that doctors who have reasonable objections to participating in things like abortion should find other work – that there is simply no room in American hospitals for Catholic doctors.  And I assume that this also means that Catholic hospitals in general should close if they can’t provide abortions.

Bill Donahue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights says that Ms. Coakley is not only attacking Catholics, she is trampling on religious freedom.  Statement here.

Please make sure your Catholic family and friends living in Massachusetts know where Ms. Coakley stands on Catholicism and religious freedom.

Full radio interview with Ms. Coakley can  be heard here.
