Obama Nominee Tried to Take Away Catholic Church Tax Exemption

Dawn Johnson, Nominated to head Justice Dept. Office of Legal Counsel

As the St. Michael Society continues with our petition drive urging the resignation of Obama’s faith based initiatives advisor Harry Knox for his attacks on Pope  Benedict XVI, there is yet another Obama friend and nominee that has a record of hostility against Catholics. Dawn Johnson, nominated by the President to head the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department, in the 1980s tried to revoke the tax-exempt status of the Catholic Church over the church’s position in defense of the unborn.

Bill Donahue, President of The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, fired back at a recent New York Times editorial encouraging her nomination.

“BASELESS CONCERNS” OVER DAWN JOHNSEN?
February 4, 2010

Catholic League president Bill Donohue directs his comments at an editorial in today’s New York Times:

If someone were nominated to serve in a major legal position in a Republican administration who previously tried to take away the tax exempt status of Islamic mosques and institutions—for purely political reasons—everyone knows that he or she would never be given a hearing.

So why is Dawn Johnsen’s nomination to head the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel still being considered? She tried in the late 1980s to take away the tax exempt status of the Roman Catholic Church, all because she wanted to silence the Church’s voice on abortion. Yet the New York Times audaciously asserts today that the “baseless objections” and “baseless concerns” of her critics should be ignored.

Since when are objections to proven instances of bigotry considered “baseless”? Would it be “baseless” to object to someone who wants to deny Muslims the same tax exempt status afforded Catholics, Protestants, Jews and others? Would not such a person be branded a bigot who is unfit to serve in any administration, especially in a high post in the Justice Department? If the answer is obvious, then why is her nomination even alive?

Between the appointment of Harry Knox, and the nomination of Ms. Johnson, Catholics are growing increasingly concerned about a trending disdain for Catholics by the President and his Administration.  This is why it is so important for Catholics to speak out and take action in every way we can to defend our faith.  Please remember to sign our petition urging the resignation of Harry Knox.

How about asking Catholic Clergy to speak to everyone who will listen about this adminstration and urge voters not to elect Democrats. The publicity would be priceless, and it would finally show that the Church has a spine. Sorry to be so direct but it is dismaying to see the Church always turning the other cheek – which is what Democrats and the mainstream media wants – a completely defanged Church so that it can pursue its own agenda -which is 100% opposed to everything any Christian or Jew for that matter, believes in. Get aggressive – really aggressive – or become utterly irrelevant – this Administration is a harbinger of things to come. Believe me when I say that being loud, and in your face is the best thing the Church can do. It won’t be easy, but it has to be done – it’s either that or become more irrelevant, and more impotent over time. It’s now or never. Get to work!

Even though I’m not a catholic, I am a christian and I am saddened that such harsh things could be said about an honorable man such as the Pope. I feel Knox should be removed from office. Our president seems to endorse such people as Knox, this makes me very concerned for all christians and catholics.

I couldn’t agree with you more. No more pussy-footing around. These are times that try men’s souls and not the time to turn the other cheek.

If the people fear the government that is tyranny. If the government fears the people that is liberty. I vote for liberty from Catholic and Conservative bashers. I live in the Live Free or Die state. Are we free men and women or simple Obama’s peasants?

In the video of Harry Knox, who is the idiot at the table with a bag on his head? I think that frightens me more than Knox’s comments. Thanks

The Pope does need to speak out when attacked by this immoral bigot! The Catholic Bishops of this country need to make a unified public statement! The American Catholics need to appreciate that this how christians are going to persecuted by the servants of thew devil. The Church pastors need to let their respective flocks know what is being said and the church attendees should take it from there. Unbelievably Catholics voted for this person in large numbers so that needs to be addressed and we must fight back now!!!

What frightens me, is that there are so many Catholics that choose to go against the Church. During the election, while not telling anyone who to vote for, this administrations record was made clear. Yet Catholics went ahead and voted for him. It does not help when you have supposed Catholics high in office, that misrepresent the Churchs stand on everything from birth control to abortion. When Notre Dame went ahead and had the President as a guest, against the outrage of many many Catholics, it is no wonder there is so much confusion. We have so many fantastic Bishops, that have spoken out loudly in the last year, but the people need to start listening.

It is about time the Church speaks up; enough is enough of this communistic regime. I have had it with these lying politicians.
